実に明快な作品だ。サックス・ジャイアンツゆかりの曲をワン・ホーン編成で豪快に演奏するスタイルは、2001年に発表した『シュガー』とまったく同じ。ただし今回は2曲にギターのチャック・ローブを加えている点がやや目新しい。スニッツァーはローリング・ストーンズやポール・サイモンのツアー・メンバーであり、ポップ~ロック・シーンで活動してきた人だが、マンハッタン・ジャズ・クインテットに参加したのを機に、ジャズ・ファンに知られるようになった。そういうキャリアの持ち主なのでマイケル・ブレッカー同様、ジャズ・ファンからは色眼鏡で見られがち。しかしヘンに技巧を凝らさずエモーション一本で迫るスタイルは、進化したジャズが時に忘れがちな根源的なパワーと情念を思い出させてくれて、そのあたりが非常に好ましい。ただし注文もある。それは選曲。ロリンズ&コルトレーン関連の曲はOKだけど、私的にはサンボーンやカーペンターズはしっくりこないのだ。 (市川正二) --- 2002年11月号
