『Behind the Music』は、スウェーデンのイェーテボリ出身のザ・サウンドトラック・オブ・アワ・ライヴズの3作目にあたるアルバム。彼らが最初に世を騒がせたのは、1996年のデビュー作『Welcome to the Infant Freebase』だった。ロックン・ロールに捧げられた金切り声のオマージュとでもいうべき『Welcome~』には、（特に1968年~74年の絶頂期の）ローリング・ストーンズへの敬意があふれていた。だがサウンドトラックスは、いつだって単なるトリビュート集団では終わっていない。ライヴでは、トリックやストロボ・ライトを総動員した、派手でショウビズ色の強いストーンズ流の演出を避けた。代わりにヴォーカルのEbbot Lundberg――白いローブに身を包んだ大柄のヒゲ男――が、これぞ本物のマニック・ストリート・プリーチャーといった風情でステージに姿を現すのだ。このヒップな神官の前では、ストーンズもマニックスも形なしだった。『Behind The Music』で、サウンドトラックスはそんな強烈で特異なライヴにマッチする音を探し求めている。気取らないバッキング・ヴォーカルが聴ける「Sister Surround」、荒々しいセミ・サイケ「Independent Luxury」では、いまだにストーンズの影響が認められる。だが、今回は守備範囲が広がった。ベースのKalle Gustafssonが書いた曲「Broken Imaginary Time」は、オルガンがリードする荘厳な悲歌で、「Eleanor Rigby」を思わせる。かと思えば「Nevermore」では、ピアノとギターが主役となってビートルズをしのばせる。ただし、この曲に限りノエル・ギャラガーというフィルターが介在しており、いわばオアシス流のビートルズ像だ。その他、「Infra Riot」はガレージ色が濃厚で、「Still Aging」はボブ・ディラン的なリズムを持つ。「Mind the Gap」は、アルバトロスと「Shine On You Crazy Diamond」「Interstellar Overdrive」のピンク・フロイドをブレンドした感じ。エキサイティングなアルバムだ。ソウルフルで心に響く。次回作がさらに優れたものになるのはまず間違いないところだ。（Dominic Wills, Amazon.co.uk）
