ヴォーン・ウィリアムズの映画音楽集。「南極のスコット」からの組曲完全版（ホッジャー編）、「沿岸警備隊」組曲、人々の土地（ホッジャー編）の3作品を収録。ガンバ指揮　BBCフィル　シェフィールド・フィルハーモニー合唱団の演奏。オルガンはスコット。録音は2002年。

ルモン・ガンバによるシャンドス・レーベルへの一連の「映画音楽シリーズ」の一枚。「南極のスコット」は1948年に封切られた映画だ。後にヴォーン・ウィリアムズはこの映画音楽を一つの交響曲にまとめ上げている。それが交響曲第7番「南極交響曲」である。映画音楽を丸ごと編纂し、交響曲のナンバーに組み込まれる試みは珍しく、それだけこの映画音楽に様々な動機が存在し、作曲者自身の心血の注がれた音楽であったことがわかる。

交響曲の場合、5つの楽章になっていたが、当組曲版（つまりはサウンドトラック版）は18のトラックになっている。ディスクに「世界初録音」とあるのは、このような形でCDになったのが初めてということである。聴いてみると、交響曲に姿を変える前の様々なテーマが出現し、楽しい。ソプラノ独唱、壮麗なオルガン、そしてウインドマシーンの挿入と映画のシーンのための演出が、そのまま交響曲のアイデアに転化されていった変転をオリジナルからあらためて見ることができる。また効果音的な経過句のようなフレーズも残っているのがうれしい。

「沿岸警備隊」組曲は同名の1942年の映画のための音楽で、音楽自体の雰囲気は「南極のスコット」に近い。記録映画的な仰々しさと、ヴォーン・ウィリアムズならではのオーケストレーションが聴き栄えする。場面場面の急速な移り変わりも映画を彷彿とさせる。「人々の土地」も1943年の映画のための音楽。こちらは長閑さをもった内容になっている。

いずれもガンバ指揮の質の高い演奏と録音で、古の映画の映画音楽を聴くことができるわけで、ヴォーン・ウィリアムズの曲という以上に興味の尽きない一枚だ。
