矢野顕子と同い年の者です。
彼女の21歳の時のデビュー作『JAPANESE GIRL』を久しぶりに聴きました。1976年に発売されたものですから、もう30年ほど前になるのですね。

発売当初から話題になっていましたが、今聴いてもその音楽は全く色あせていません。その斬新さは現在でも新しく、その完成度はとてもデビューアルバムとは信じられないほどです。

その類をみない歌声と、リズム感溢れる多彩なピアノ。そしてリトル・フィート,細野晴臣,あがた森魚,ムーンライダーズ等の豪華なバックバンドの奏でる華麗な饗宴。どれをとっても水準の高い曲の連続です。

1曲目のヘビーなリズム感に支えられた熱演の「気球にのって」を聴いていますと、国籍と音楽ジャンルを超えたミューズの神の化身を見る思いです。2曲目の東洋的な旋律に乗せられた変拍子の続く「クマ」は、難しいリズムにうまくノッテいる矢野顕子の天才ぶりが伺える1曲です。

3曲目の「電話線」のメロディーも好きですが、ロサンゼルスでの録音となった津軽民謡の「ホーハイ節」も元に作られた4曲目の「津軽ツアー」の印象深さは類を見ないものですね。
また青森のねぶた祭りから題材が取られた「ふなまち唄 Part II」の原始的なエネルギーの爆発は、そのデビュー作にかける彼女の意気込みが感じられます。10曲目の「ふなまち唄 Part I」の内省的な歌唱と太鼓と笛という日本を意識したアレンジはとても斬新です。

でも、全ての曲の中で一番好きなのは、9曲目の「丘を越えて」です。あの古賀政男メロディをここまで独自の世界へと導いたアレンジに拍手、拍手です。リズムも強調され、なによりノリが違います。あがた森魚の歌声も光っています。本当に彼女の名声を確立した1曲だと今でもそう思っています。

21歳の矢野顕子の恐るべき才能を如何なく発揮し、その魅力を満載した歴史的名盤と言えると思います。

　LPの時代が終焉を迎えCD全盛になった頃、逆にLPでこのアルバムを捜したマニアが多かったのは知る人のみ知るオーディオマニアの噂話。実際にかなりの高額で中古版が取り引きされていました。
　それだけこのアルバムの出来が良かった証拠なんです。

『矢野顕子』の存在すら知らなかった僕にとって、この一枚はかなりなショックを与えてくれました。５０年代に代表されるモダンジャズの洗礼を受けて、『モンク』の気だるさや『ピーターソン』の華麗さ。それに『パウエル』の狂気を、それぞれスプーン一杯分づつ入れたような、それでいて陽気な性格が底辺に流れる不思議な個性・・・実力あるのに『TOSHIKO』よりずっとポップス路線のジャズ。
　今の身近になった彼女より、自分のスタイルを完成させながらも、ちょっと襟を正したデビュー作『Japanese Girl』は絶対にお勧めです！

　このアルバムは「すごい」の一言に尽きる。矢野顕子がエネルギーにあふれた若き日に、気持ちをこめて作られたアルバムと言える。
　後奏でそれぞれのパートが熱の入った演奏を展開する「気球にのって」、流れるようなメロディーを奏でる「電話線」、日本的な音色を用いる「へこりぷたあ」「風太」「ふなまち唄Part1」など。一曲だけ1973年に録音された「大いなる椎の木」は、矢野顕子の作品としてはとても素朴な作品で、逆に強い印象を残す。
　収録時間は40分にも満たないにも関わらず、十分に満足することができるのは、作り手や演奏家の熱が露骨なまでに伝わってくるからなのだろう。
