   イギリス、ヨークシャー州の炭坑町で、炭坑の事務長の父、看護婦の母と暮らす少年ジョン。一人ぼっちだったジョンはある日、町はずれでコリー犬の子犬を見つける。その犬、ラッシーはジョンのかけがえのない友となるが、ある事件をきっかけに離ればなれに。ラッシーは、ジョンのもとに戻るべく長い旅路につく…。映画でも有名な、エリック・ナイトの原作をアニメ化した、1996年放送作品。
   1年間続くのが定例であった「世界名作劇場」にあって、この作品は途中打ち切りの憂き目にあってしまったのだろうか、全体としての話のバランスがいささか悪い。話のキモであるはずのラッシーの旅が、最後のほんの数話で語られているのだ（そういう意味では、再編集して後半をまるまるそれに割いた「完結版」の完成度は高い）。ちなみに最終話の第26話は、TV放送も叶わなかったそうだ（DVDでは、第6巻に収録）。
   しかしながら、ジョンとラッシーが信頼を重ねていくエピソードは心なごませ、まぎれもない「世界名作劇場」印。ラスト近くの、ひたすらジョンのいる場所に向かって歩き続けるラッシーの健気さ、そしてラッシーの帰還を信じつづけるジョンの純粋さも胸を打つ。（安川正吾）

（Vol．２のレビューから若干続きます）個人的には世界名作劇場の中でも一番好きな作品ですが、この作品の視聴率が低かったのにはやはりそれなりの理由があるとは思います。

日常的なドラマを情感豊かに描くよりも、美少女や暴力シーンを披露した方が遥かに手っ取り早く視聴率を稼げる時代においては、世界名作劇場的手法が生き残る術はなかったのかも知れません（この作品の前後のティコやロミオやレミが、名劇的要素に加えて、時折作中に今風の暴力・恋愛といったドラマ要素を絡めたおかげでウケが良かったのも、それを証明していますよね。）。そう言ったイミでは、晩期の世界名作劇場４作品の中では一番“古風”なスタイルだと思います。

そういうワケで本放送時は多少不遇だった本作ですが、DVDとなって手に取れる現在は、その真価が十二分に発揮されています。オリジナル要素が強いため、脚本や演出に“弱さ”が目立つエピソードもあるにはあるものの、開放されて生きるこどもたちや、それを優しく見守る大人たちの姿を、時にコミカルに時に暖かく、コトバで説明せずに伝えたありようは、観ていてとても清々しいです。

取り分けVol．2とこのVol．３にかけて収録されている第９話~第11話までの、令嬢プリシラ・ラドリングを中心に描かれたエピソードは、この作品の真髄とも言えて、なんとも言えない情感と美しさに満ちています。

シンプルな娯楽とも、純粋な名作劇場路線とも取れないからこそ辿りつけた描写―それがこの世界名作劇場『名犬ラッシー』ならではの個性であり、魅力なのだと思います。
