クラシック音楽とロックの融合って言葉、今更聞いてもピンと来ない方も多いでしょうね。プロコル･ハルムはこのテーマに正面から挑み、本作品で完成させたのが73年です。

この時代、急速な進化を遂げた電子楽器なしで創り上げた荘厳かつ流麗な作品で、英国らしい気品あるサウンドにウィットに富んだ歌詞、今聴いても新鮮な感動を呼び起こしてくれます。翌年にリリースされた"Birds and Fruits"とも音の面で類似点が多く、この２枚が彼らの最高傑作でしょう。

さて、ピアノの響きとギター、キーボードのアンサンブルも素晴らしいのですが、特筆すべきは今は亡きＢ.Ｊ.ウィルソンの驚異的なドラミングです。当時のプロコル･サウンドの美しさ、荘厳さをダイナミックかつ安定したドラミングでしっかり支えているわけですが、技の豊富さには驚いてしまいます。

ロック作品として最も高貴で上品な作品のひとつと言える。ソフトでありながらもクラシカルでシンフォニックなサウンドにより繰り出される世界はひとつの芸術とも言える。その一方、親しみやすく美しいメロディは限られたマニアだけでなく、万人を魅了するポテンシャルをも併せ持っていると筆者は考える。
