ラグレーンは、10代でデビューした頃、ジャンゴ・ラインハルトの再来と騒がれ、その後そうした自分に嫌気がさしたのか、フュージョンに、正統派ジャズにとスタイルを変えたが、前作からまたもとのジャンゴ・スタイルで大評判を呼んでいる。これはその第2弾で、今度のジャンゴ再訪の意味が強烈に出ている。ジャンゴのお馴染みの曲もあるけど、たとえばジャンゴは決してやることはなかったと思われるビ・バップ・チューンを取り上げ、“過激なジャンゴ”を創出。いや、このアルバム全体が、荒々しく突き上げるような演奏でジャンゴのコピーとはまったく違うのだ。コンビのバイオリンも、粘っこく情念的で、スウィートなグラッペリとまったく対照的だ。ジャンゴその人も情熱的だったが、ラグレーンも見事に同質の情熱を引き継ぎながら、それを別の方向で突っ走る。むしろ、それがラグレーンらしく強烈だ。36歳になったが、その激しい生き方に、さらに油が注がれると言ったらいいだろうか。 (青木和富) --- 2002年11月号
