これぞブリティッシュ・ロック。哀感漂うメロディーと線の細いボーカル、華麗なるツインリードギター。名曲揃いのベスト盤的ライブなんだけど、スタジオ盤よりも伸びやかにプレイしているところがいい。ビートルズ後パンク以前の70年代ロックの儚さと美しさに満ち満ちている。

「ロックンロール・ウィドウ」の、ツインリードギターで、あっちでピヨピヨ、こっちでピヨピヨっていうところが好きなんだなー。「ビーコンのバラード」もいい。決して歴史に埋もれさせてはならない名盤だよー。

デビュー作から４枚目まででセレクトされたベストチョイスのライブ。主は「アーガス」でそれに１枚目と２枚目と４枚目からええとこをプラス。「ビーコンのバラード」とか「ロックンロール・ウィドウ」なんかも意外とええんですよ。なんかこの２つの曲はこのライブの方が生き生きとしているようです。ライブの名盤というのは数多いですが、個人的に今まで一番多く聞いているような気がします。これに「ペルセポネ」が入っていたらもう他に何にもいらないという選曲ですが、まあ無いもの強請りというものですね。ジャケットもいいです。なかに入っているライブの写真も雰囲気が伝わってきてええです。特にアンディ・パウエルのフライング・Vを弾く格好は当時でもぴか一でした。今は全くスキンヘッドになちゃいましたが・・・。
まあ時の経つのは避けられませんので・・・。

ロック全盛時代、確かに巷のゼッペリン、パープルなどの人気に比べるとやや地味な存在ではあったものの、知る人ぞ知る実に渋いバンドです。特にこのアルバムの時期はなんと言っても文字通りウィッシュボーンの絶頂期。各自の音源の歯車がかみ合い、最も彼ら「らしい」演奏だと思います。ツインギターのかみ合いはまさに最高で、テッドのギターはアンディーのそれに比べややおとなしめと言われますが、ツインとしての組み合わせで見れば絶品で、お互いの個性を引き立て合い、素晴らしい相乗効果を生み出しています。アンディーのギターは後にローリーが加わった期間、彼との相性や押しの強さのせいか、やや一歩引いた、精鋭を欠いた印象を個人的には受けます。しかしこのLive Dateのアンディー、油の乗り切った感あり、聴く人の心を打ちます。また、アンディーのギターは情緒的ですがプレーは比較的シンプルで、いわゆるテクニシャン的な「複雑」さが無い所も気持ちが良いところ。当時、大抵のアマチュアロックバンドがウィッシュボーンの何らかの曲をレパートリーに入れていたのも分かる気がします。このアルバムにはほとんどの名曲がライブで収録され、かつ、フェニックスが2種類入っていて比較しても楽しめる構成、心憎いと思います。５つ星の名作です。
