予想以上に地道に活動を続けるアップルズの最初のアルバム(1995年作)は、エルのマイク･オールウェイが惚れ込み、新たなレーベルif･･･の配給第一弾となった名作だ。アップルズのアルバムにはどれも期待を裏切らない安定したクオリティがあるが、やはりこの1stの弾ける感じは今聴いても新鮮で楽しい。録音環境がまだ良くなく、おそらく8トラックであるが、それがこの雑多な感じのアルバムをよりよれよれガレージぽくしていると思う。おそらくアメリカ・インディーギタポのアルバムの中でも屈指の一枚だと思う。マイク･オールウェイが気に入ったのも、実に納得できる内容だ。
僕はこのジャケットもすごく好きで、インナーには同じタッチの絵がたくさん入っており、自分の好きなジャケットにすることもできる。この絵の感じが音をしっかり表しているのもいいと思う。ギターポップ道には、避けて通れない道だろう。
