Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

This is the fifth recording of Moeran's enchanting symphony to date. The performance from the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra under David Lloyd-Jones can stand with any of its predecessors. While suggestive of the music of various British composers, the main influence is Sibelius, not least as we sense that great issues of the human spirit are set against the backdrop of landscape and weather. So while this clearly is outdoor music, it ultimately conveys an anger that some now feel reflects Moeran's experiences of the Great War. The slow movement broods darkly, while the final movement carries a bitter edge. But there is also plenty of charm and lightness of touch, most obviously in the delightfully sunny scherzo with its gorgeous opening oboe solo. Alive to all the colours of a richly-painted score, Lloyd-Jones once again does the business for Naxos in a reading that boasts shape and direction, drive and moments of great tenderness. The Sinfonietta is "easier" listening, belying the fact that it was written near the start of the Second World War. It has many of the qualities of a serenade, mixing rhythmic exuberance and wistful reflection. The sound is good too. --Andrew Green
