   デヴィッド・クローネンバーグ監督がウィリアム・S・バロウズの原作をもとに映画化した作品。怪しげな登場人物にグロテスクなクリーチャー。しゃべるビッグ・サイズの昆虫に、ジェームズ・ウッズの神経症的な表情。
   鑑賞者の神経を刺激するビジュアルメイクに関しては確信犯のクローネンバーグ監督だが、本作での悪趣味ぶりはバロウズという後見人を得たことでいつもより三割増。
   1953年のニューヨーク。害虫駆除業者ウィリアム・リー（ジェームズ・ウッズ）は妻の頭上に乗せたグラスを銃で撃ち落とす「ウィリアム・テルごっこ」で、誤って妻を射殺してしまう。麻薬の力に導かれ「インターゾーン」へと逃げ込んだリー。そこには多用な国籍の奇怪な人々がうごめき、巨大な麻薬工場が営まれていた…と、ストーリーを書いてもイメージこそ湧くものの、物語としての体裁はないに等しく、明らかに原作者のバロウズをイメージした主人公の不思議な体験をじっと眺めていくしかないだろう。ただしハワード・ショアの音楽がこの悪夢のような映像に心地よさを加味しており、オーネット・コールマンのサックスに恍惚としているうちに、クローネンバーグの術中にハマってしまうので御用心。難解な作品ではないが、観客を選ぶ作品と心得られたし。（斉藤守彦）

初見のとき、誤って吹替版を借りてしまい、おかげで抱腹絶倒ものの２時間を過ごすはめになった。薬中の作家が体験する現実とも妄想ともつかぬ世界。いきなり妻を射殺したりタイプライター型のゴキブリないしゴキブリ型のタイプライターがしゃべったりと、グロテスクかつ支離滅裂な作品だけれど、それでいて全編を奇妙なユーモアが覆っている。ラストはすこぶる不可解だが、あれはああなるしかないという必然性は感じられる。それにしても、あの終わりは、作家とは「書く」という行為を通して現実を反復・変奏してゆく存在だということを暗示しているのだろうか？

十分にバロウズ的な雰囲気を感じることが可能な価値ある映像作品。個人的に忘れられないのがロイ・シャイダー演じるベンウェイ医師。終盤での登場時のあのインパクトといったら噴飯モノで、フレンチコネクションでの渋さやオールザットジャズで見せた輝き、それらを含めた自分の中の彼の偶像が粉砕された気さえした。面と向かって人と真面目な話をしてる際に中から彼が現れる様を想像したりすると取り返しがつかない。それ程の怪演を見せたロイはやはり偉大だった。

あんなタイプライターがあったら一日中話しかけていそうな自分に「怖っ」
しかしタイトルの意味はなんなんでっしゃろか？
