   イギリス、ヨークシャー州の炭坑町で、炭坑の事務長の父、看護婦の母と暮らす少年ジョン。一人ぼっちだったジョンはある日、町はずれでコリー犬の子犬を見つける。その犬、ラッシーはジョンのかけがえのない友となるが、ある事件をきっかけに離ればなれに。ラッシーは、ジョンのもとに戻るべく長い旅路につく…。映画でも有名な、エリック・ナイトの原作をアニメ化した、1996年放送作品。
   1年間続くのが定例であった「世界名作劇場」にあって、この作品は途中打ち切りの憂き目にあってしまったのだろうか、全体としての話のバランスがいささか悪い。話のキモであるはずのラッシーの旅が、最後のほんの数話で語られているのだ（そういう意味では、再編集して後半をまるまるそれに割いた「完結版」の完成度は高い）。ちなみに最終話の第26話は、TV放送も叶わなかったそうだ（DVDでは、第6巻に収録）。
   しかしながら、ジョンとラッシーが信頼を重ねていくエピソードは心なごませ、まぎれもない「世界名作劇場」印。ラスト近くの、ひたすらジョンのいる場所に向かって歩き続けるラッシーの健気さ、そしてラッシーの帰還を信じつづけるジョンの純粋さも胸を打つ。（安川正吾）

キャラの造型が地味だったせいか、惜しくも早期打ち切りとなってしまった本作。世界名作劇場の中でも極めて影が薄い。（これと次の家なき子レミの低視聴率が、結果として名劇の長い歴史に終止符を打たせてしまった）

ただ中身は個人的には名劇の中でも上位に入るほど印象深かったです。

どこにでもありそうな家族のどこにでもいそうなごく普通の少年と、ラッシーや友達の心の交流を、とても優しいまなざしで描いている。

例えば友達とボートで川を溯るような些細な出来事にさえ少年らしい未知の探究心を躍らせるところなどは、観ていてかつて自分にもそういう日があったと優しく思い起こさせられた。

名劇と言えば教訓めいたメッセージ性や、主人公が不幸にただひたすら耐えるような姿勢を賞賛するようなテーマを含んだ作品が多く、ちょっと観ていて重いものがあったが、この名犬ラッシーのテーマはあくまでジョンとラッシーの、そして二人を取り巻く人たちの心の交流なので、観た人にとても爽やかな感動を与えてくれる。所謂美少女路線に走らなかったのも◎。

そして忘れてはいけないのが音楽。OPの“終わらない物語”、EDの“少年の丘”。どちらもとても素晴らしく、また作中に流れるBGMも、まるでジョンとラッシーを祝福してくれてるかのように、透き通った音色で物語を盛り上げてくれます。

　原作エリク・ナイトの同名小説を、日本アニメーションが１９９６年にアニメ化した作品のＤＶＤ化第一弾です。

　この作品では、原作中では語られなかった「ラッシー」と「ジョン」の出会いから物語が始まっていて、二人の友情が築きあがっていく様子が実にじっくりと描かれています。基本的に一話完結なのでとても観やすく、一話一話ほのぼのとした雰囲気の中でストーリーが進んでいきます。親子で楽しめる最高のアニメです！
