多様化した音楽スタイル、悲しむべき戦争を一端とした日本の動乱。"カオスと化した20世紀"に翻弄されつつも、日本における近代~現代音楽の潮流をリードした橋本國彦。そのあまりに多彩で重要な活動は、第二次世界大戦後になって意識的に封印されていたきらいがあります。第2楽章に沖縄の音階を使ったことで有名な「交響曲第1番」(皇紀2600年奉祝曲)は驚くべきことにこれが初録音。「羽衣伝説」に基づくバレエ音楽「天女と漁夫」は、近代フランス音楽と日本の伝統文化との融合。作品の再評価を促す、沼尻/都響の素晴らしい演奏で。

旋律美と歌心にあふれた、ラフマニノフを彷彿とさせるような、とてもステキな交響曲です。
単に旋律が美しいだけではなく、多様な音楽様式・作曲技法が凝縮されており、繰り返し聞き
たくなる曲です。
沼尻竜典指揮の東京都交響楽団も立派に演奏しきっており、さらに資料的意味においてもこの
ディスクの価値を高めています。
この作品は、「皇紀2600年」を祝う音楽として作曲されていたことから、戦後は思想的政治的等
の理由から長らくアンタッチャブルになっていたようです。確かに、戦争との関連性という複雑
な側面があるのは事実ですが、このような魅力的な作品を埋もれたままにしておくのは、やはり
惜しいことだと思います。
この作品が生み出された歴史的背景や、その後の作曲家の足跡（戦後、懺悔の念に苛まれながら
44歳で胃ガンにより夭逝した）を辿ることは、過去の歴史を直視することにもつながり、その中
には、私たちが未来に向けて生かしていかなければならない「何か」が含まれているような気が
します。
