Always more ambitious than most of their contemporaries, The Go-Betweens quit their native Australia for England just after their first album. Before Hollywood is a major leap forward in terms of confidence and proficiency, and contains, in Grant McLennan's half-spoken "Cattle & Cane" (a sombre, half-spoken remembrance of a Queensland childhood), the first of The Go-Betweens' many resounding classics. Here, The Go-Betweens are still experimenting with slightly abrasive, askance rhythms that they aren't quite up to playing--it would take until the next album, Spring Hill Fair, for Forster and McLennan to properly realise that what they were good at was conventionally-structured pop songs--but there are still more great things here than most bands managed in a career; "Ask", "Two Step, Step Out" and "Dusty In Here", to name but three. --Andrew Mueller
