Album Description

It's difficult for American listeners to remember this, but like the recordings of the Beatles and nearly all other British groups of the '60s, the Rolling Stones' first several albums did not make it across the Atlantic in one piece. Prior to ABKCO's comprehensive 2002 reissue program, the US versions of the Stones' early albums were the de facto standards on CD, but particularly in the case of 1966's AFTERMATH, the UK album was very different.

The track lineup is shuffled and expanded to create a much different mood. "Paint It Black" is gone, replaced as the opening track by the snotty social commentary of "Mother's Little Helper," which--when followed by "Stupid Girl," "Lady Jane," "Under My Thumb," and "Dontcha Bother Me"--is like a pentathlon of punky misogyny capped by the grinding blues jam "Goin' Home." Side Two is more emotionally varied but just as musically far-reaching, adding the poppy "Take It Or Leave It" and "What To Do" to an already strong set of tunes centered on the stunning full-length version of "Out of Time" that for some reason had never been released in the United States before this belated reissue.

MickとKeithが書きためたオリジナル曲で勝負した、充実の一作、彼らの成功の礎となった初期の傑作です。
"Mother's little helper"、"Lady Jane"といったヒット曲、長らくライブの重要曲となる"Under my thumb"などが収められています。また、２人の作品が様々なポップシンガーによって歌われ、ヒットを記録した時期であり、"Out of time"、"Take it, or leave it"などがこれにあたります。
なかでも、Brianの奏でるマリンバで有名な"Out of time"（"Flowers","Single collection"の収録とは別バージョンです。）はMickの名唱の一つでしょう。無駄のない音をバックに伸び伸びと歌うMickのヴォーカル、初期からのStonesファンには至福の５分半なわけです。

さほど知られていない曲も含めて、魅力的な曲が揃った初期の傑作ですから、80年代以降のStonesファンで"Jumpin' Jack"より前、初期のものを一枚という際には最適と思います。

僕個人としてはシングル・ヒットを量産していたこの時期がSTONESの全盛期とも思うのですが、、　　CD世代の私が初めてこれを聴いたのはかなり年上の知り合いが貸してくれた英国盤ＬＰででした。私の好きなSTONESアルバムBEST５に入ります　　ミック・ジャガー曰く「自分にとってホントに画期的のレコード」とのコメントがあるとおり、何か突き抜け感みたいなものが感じられます。それもそのはずで、ミック＆キース初の全曲オリジナル・ソングアルバムです。単にオリジナルというだけでなく、１・２・３・４・９・１１・１２と名曲多数で、大半がカットされている米国盤よりは断然こちら英国盤がオススメです！　　　という訳でホントの意味でミックとキースが曲を用意し皆で録るという体制が出来上がった訳で、まともなブルース・バンドを目指したブライアン・ジョーンズとしては面白くなかったでしょう。恐らくここら辺りから彼のSTONESに対する不満が大きくなっていったと思われます。このアルバムでブライアンは色んな楽器を演奏しており（ダルシマー、シタール、マリンバ　　ダルシマーって言われてもどんな楽器かワカランッ！）ラフでルーズ　音楽的という言葉とは程遠いパンク・バンド、Ｒ・ストーンズに音楽的なアレンジで曲に色を付けています　ここで、ここぞと言う音を出しているのはさすがで所々で印象的なフレーズも聴かれます　　　　そう言った訳で、Ｒ・STONESとＢ・ジョーンズの個性が良い形で結実し合った最後の名作ではないかと思います

　本作から"Between The Buttons"、"Their Satanic Majesties Request"まではストーンズの歴史の中でも際立って異色な時期と言える。その大きな理由はそれまでのR&Bから離れた楽曲が多いことと、B.Jonesのマルチプレイヤーとしての才能がフルに発揮されたことである。ストーンズは各時代において音楽シーンの流行に敏感な優れたクロスオーバー感覚を持ちえたバンドだったが、それは本作で発揮されたブライアンの嗅覚から始まったものと言っても過言ではない。

　全作Jaggar&Richardsの作品で｢触れた楽器の真の音を出せる｣ブライアンの真髄が発揮されたのは皮肉だが、1の12弦ギター・シタール、麻酔的な作用を聴き手に及ぼす4、9のマリンバリフ、弦を叩く形式の原始的な楽器ダルシマーによる典雅な3などは彼の演奏なくしてはあり得ない作品だった。初のステレオ録音ということで、例えば1の片チャンネルだけ聴くとほとんどミックのアカペラが聴けるので試すのも一興。キーボードの明るい音色が女性をコケにする歌詞をさらに強調する2や英国人らしいブラックな歌詞の7なども聴き所だが、何と言っても長いブルース"Going Home"が物凄い。ミックのちょっといやらしいボーカルもナニだが、ブライアンのブルースハープが忘我の境地で空前絶後の演奏である。ジャムセッションでこれだけ演ってしまうのだから脱帽するしかない。

プライマルのボビーも愛聴してるという、ミックとキースが初めて全曲を手掛けた作品。オススメってゆーより、できたら聴いて欲しいアルバムです。
