   NHK総合テレビ特番『平井堅・楽園の彼方に ~アメリカ”大きな古時計”を探して』（2001年8月放映）で熱唱し、放送直後から問い合わせが殺到した1870年代のアメリカ童謡「Grandfather's Clock」（「大きな古時計」）を、企画盤マキシシングル“Memorial Autumn Edition”と銘打ってリリース。
   子どものころ母親が歌ってくれた懐かしい思い出を胸に、亀田誠治のプロデュースでソウルフルに歌う<1>、愛犬PAULに捧げた追悼バラード<4>など、心温まるナンバーが、飾らない素直な気持ちを呼び戻してくれる。ジャケット写真には、平井堅が小学4年生の時に描き、三重県名張市学童展にて金賞を受賞した自宅の古時計の絵が使われている。（北崎みずほ）

自分が幼い頃に聞いていた曲が、娘の子守唄に・・・何度も何度も歌いました。この曲を歌ってあげるとすぐに寝るんですよ。自分も歌っていてすごく落ち着く。それに懐かしいぃ~。

誰でも知ってるこの御馴染みの曲ですが平井さんが歌う事によって更に際立っています。
私は「大きな古時計」「PAUL」の２曲とも聞いて泣いてしまいました｡
とても悲しいけどとても優しい曲です｡
英語版を聞いて分かったんですが原詩ではおじいさんは９０歳だったんですね｡初めて知りました｡
とても良い出来ですので皆さんも聞いてみてはいかがでしょう？

　自分が幼かったとき、よく聴いていたことを思い出します。今回平井さんがこの曲をカバーアレンジしてリリースすると聞いてびっくりしたけど、とても良い感じでした。童謡とＲ＆Ｂの同居というのを思いつくところがにくい！そして平井さんのソウルフルな声はとても心地よいです。ジャケットも平井さんが幼少の時に書いた大きな古時計ということでまた懐かしさを倍増させています。
