1983年、牛次郎と神矢みのるにより少年チャンピオンに連載されたコミックを原作に、プラモデルブームの真っただ中に登場したプラモデルバトルアニメーション。全37話を6枚のディスクに完全収録し、その他各種映像特典やブックレット、さらには当時バンダイより発売されていた柔王丸のプラモデル1/3スケール復刻版まで付いた（注：プラモデルは初回版のみ）、期間限定版ボックスセット。
少年・素形3四郎が、マイコンを内蔵した身長30センチのプラモデル「柔王丸」を操作し、数々の強敵と闘っていく物語が展開する。いのまたむつみ、金田伊功、板野一郎ら、今や巨匠のアニメーターが参加しており、そのクオリティは今でも驚くほど。近年の作品「エンジェリックレイヤー」の元ネタとも噂されているので見比べてみるのも一興。（田中 元）
