メンデルスゾーンのヴァイオリン協奏曲の録音当時、ムターはまだ十代だったが、十代の少女が演奏しているとはとても思えない。濃厚な節回しに、ぞくりとする。カラヤンの重厚な伴奏にも決して負けていないところが凄い。ソロ・オケ共にこってりとしているので、第３楽章の軽快なメロディが重くもたついてしまっているところが、個人的な好みとしては残念であるが。
チャイコフスキーのほうは、カラヤンとの一連の主要な協奏曲録音の最後を飾ったライヴ録音。神童も二十歳過ぎればただの人とよく言われるが、カラヤンの庇護のもと順調に大輪の花を咲かせた若かりし頃のムターの正統派の濃厚な演奏が堪能できる。

２曲共に名演奏。
メンデルスゾーンは濃厚で、
軽やかでテクニックを見せびらかす傾向のあるこの曲にしては
珍しい演奏だと思う。ロマン的な演奏だと思う。

ただ、個人的にはカラヤンの演奏に少し不満が残った。
70年代に録音したメンデルスゾーンの交響曲は、音の高低感を
スマートに統率しており、メンデルスゾーンの音楽の良さを
巧く表現していた。
ただここでの演奏は、特に第３楽章など、音の重厚さに重きを
おいており、メンデルスゾーンらしさがあまり感じない。

チャイコフスキーは、ムター本人も後に語っていたと思うが、
カラヤンのこれ以上早くならない、ゆったりペースに、
ムターが合わせているイメージがある。
カラヤンは、概して、協奏曲においても主導権を握りつつ、
巧みに合わせる傾向があるので、この点は意外だった。

ただ、こういう優しい配慮にムターの良さがでているし、
それでも、このテンポで聴かせるのは凄いと思う。
