もうふた昔も、いやもっと以前の、それも巷間の無責任な評論家達の評を素直に信じていたころのブーレーズのイメージとは随分違うことに正直驚かされた。
彼らのブーレーズ評は概して「無味乾燥で味わいに乏しい音楽性」というものであったが、ブーレーズが変わったのだろうか？それとも評論家諸氏がいい加減だったのか？

いずれにしてもこのディスクは新鮮さにあふれている。無味乾燥とは無縁だ。
音楽ものびやかで（マーラーファンにはどう聞こえているの知らないが)私はとても好きだ。

ピエール・ブーレーズ氏のマーラー交響曲の録音。白鳥の歌ともされる第9番では、シカゴ交響楽団を選んだ。演奏自体は情感を抑制し、細部を強調することなく鳥瞰図のように全てが見通せる作りをしているが、もちろんそれだけではない。例えば第三楽章のブルレスケでは、前半ではいたずらに荒れ狂う表現に陥らぬようにオーケストラをコントロールし、一つ一つの旋律線が消えていくように演奏させている。そのことで不思議な寂しささえ感じさせる表現である。トリオを挟んだ後半では、その抑制を解く。そのことによって、ありきたりではあるが、感情の解放につながるカタルシスを得ることができる。終楽章もテンポは速く淡々としているようで、すべての動きが見通せるため、曲自体がもともと持っている諦観や哀しみに似た感情がひたひたと伝わってくる。よく考えられた演奏である。

己の死に対面するときの状態にも近い．
