本作はニーナ・シモンが６０年代後半から７０年代初期にかけて在籍した RCA 音源のベスト盤です。
RCA音源のベストは今までにもいくつか出ていますが、とりわけ本作が素晴らしいと思うのは、自作のブルース、バックラッシュ・ブルースを収録しているところです。しかも１曲目！

本作のライナーにも書かれていますが、60年代の公民権運動・黒人解放運動の盛り上がりに対する白人によるバックラッシュ(反動)、そしてマルコムＸ、キング牧師、ケネディ大統領の相次ぐ暗殺、ベトナム戦争を絡めて、凛と歌い綴る傑作。
文句なしの傑作曲なのですが、内容的にヘヴィなためか、ベスト盤に取り上げられることは少ないようです。

他にも「ホワイ（キング牧師は死んでしまった）」を収録するなど、ヒット曲やスタンダード曲を集めた気軽なベストとは異なり、彼女の持っていた多彩な要素をバラ!ンス良くまとめようとする意図が感じられます。

選曲、音質共に大変良好ですが、ブックレットには不満があります。

まず１点目は、歌詞が掲載されていないこと。彼女は自作曲には主張と詩的な感性を込め、他人の曲を取り上げる時は、部分的に歌詞を作り変えて自分のものにするシンガーですから、歌詞は重要です。

２点目は、単に曲名と作曲者のクレジットが載っているだけの曲目リスト。せめて「この曲は何年発売のどのアルバムに収録されている」程度のインフォメーションは欲しかったです。
内容が良いだけに、ブックレットの手抜きが残念です。そのために減点して星４つとしましたが、音楽そのものはもちろん５つ星です。

It was in a Paris cafe just last month (APR2003) that the songs playing in the background so caught my attention that I got up and had to ask the garcon to show me the CD. I ended up buying several albums on the way home. Just weeks later, news of her passing.

The voice which could inject fresh life into ANY song, no matter how plain, no matter how many times hitherto-covered. Listen to "Mr Bojangles", and you'll get the idea.

どんな古い曲・普通の曲・これ以上ない程カバーされて来た曲であっても、ニーナ・シモンが歌えば、『普通』が『素晴らしい』に変わる、『クラシック』が新鮮に感じる。その証拠として、11『ミスター・ボージャングル』を。

ニーナ・シモンの音楽を聴いたのは、パリのカフェで、立ち上がって、ガルソンにＣＤを見せて頂いた時。帰りに数枚のアルバムを買ってしまいました。それは先月（2003年4月）中旬でしたが、偶然な事に、その直後に、彼女が他界した。

一言で、素晴らしい歌声、アルバム。
