One of the Stones' most beloved albums, 1969's Let It Bleed was a benchmark for several reasons. First, founding guitarist Brian Jones died during the recording process. Second, the Stones take their last significant look at pure blues (Robert Johnson's spooky "Love in Vain") and country ("Country Honk," the two-stepping alter ego of "Honky-Tonk Women") before folding both styles into a cohesive rock & roll vision. 「ストーンズの最高傑作とは？」と聞かれると活躍期間が長い（というか今もって現役でっさかい）ので困るんですよね。僕はこのレコードはテンイヤーズアフターの「ＳＳＳＳＨ」と一緒に買った記憶が残っている。時は1970年の春でした。ゲストプレーヤーがスゴイでっせ。ニッキー・ホプキンス、ライ・クーダー、リオン・ラッセル、定番ボビー・キーズ、これも定番イアン・スチュアートそしてなんとアル・クーパーです。時代ですねえ。アル・クーパーですよ。何でやねんって当時思ったもんです。アル・クーパーの才能を借りたのか？って思ったくらい当時のアル・クーパーの評判は高かった。でも、やはりストーンズのアルバムになっておりました。ブライアン・ジョーンズの参加している最後の作品です。この後、かの不朽の名作「スティッキー・フィンガーズ」が出てくるのですが、荒波のロックシーンでストーンズは大丈夫か？という心配を見事に跳ね除けてくれた歴史的意義を考慮してこれをストーンズの最高傑作として推します。

３０年来のストーンズファンですが、前年の「ベガ-ズ・バンケット」と並んでこれが最高傑作と思っています（刺激度ではバンケット、完成度ではこのブリードって感じでしょうか）。

シングルヒットは含まれてないものの、ストーンズらしい湿った粘り気のある音、ブルースをベースに独自に練り上げたタフな弾力が渾然と押してくる感じが最大の魅力。キースのあのルーズなコードカッティングが醸し出すぞくぞくするようなうねり、聴くものを誘い込むようなサタニックなミックのヴォーカルを軸に、一塊の音の濁流が渦巻いている独特の感触。

オープニングの「ギミ・シェルター」、ライブでのハイライトとなっていた「ミッドナイト・ランブラー」からシメの「無情の世界」まで全く捨て曲も隙もなしの９曲。自信と余裕を感じさせるずっしりとした手応えです。

ここ１０数年、ストーンズにブランド化してしまったような寂しさを憶える自分にとって、ストーンズとはこれだと言える貴重な音の記録として大切にしている作品です。

１曲目の怪しげなイントロで始まるギミーシェルターから最後の無常の世界まで、ストンーズの持つドロドロ感が溢れかえっているアルバム。どの曲の演奏も緻密で、本作でキースのギタリストとしての才能が見事に開花したと思います。曲も様々でアメリカ南部を思わせるカントリーやブルース、ゴスペルなどを見事に取り入れています。最後まで盛り下がることの知らない本作は、是非音量を上げて聴いて欲しいです。音量を上げるとより一層ストーンズのブルージーな演奏に引き込まれることでしょう・・。
