   1972年にオリジナル盤がリリースされた本作は、当時ファイナル・ツアーと言われたツアーで録音されたキング・クリムゾン初のライヴ・アルバムだ。この1971年のツアーの顔ぶれは、ロバート・フリップ、ボズ・バレル、メル・コリンズ、イアン・ウォーレス。本作はこれまでレコード盤しかリリースされていなかったが、今回30周年記念盤としてはじめてCD化された。HDCD仕様24ビット・リマスター盤。ヴァージン・レコードより2002年リリース。


Album Details

Originally released in 1972, Earthbound was King Crimson's first ever-live album recorded during what was, at the time, King Crimson's final tour. It features King Crimson's 1971 touring line-up of Robert Fripp, Boz Burrell, Mel Collins and Ian Wallace. Earthbound was only ever released on vinyl and appears on CD for the first time (30th anniversary edition). HDCD. 24 bit remastered. Virgin. 2002.

音の悪さは、カセットテープ録音だからですが、Ｋ．Ｃ．CollectersClubの７２年ライブ（同じメンバー）でも音の違いは少ない。元々ディストーションのかかったＰＡだったわけで、最後の曲「Ｇｒｏｏｎ」では、ドラムの音までＶＣＳ３で加工している程なのです。このアルバムのすごいところは、７４年には、アンコール曲になっている「２１st.…」が１曲目に入っている事。数あるＬＩＶＥ演奏の中で最もＪＡＺＺＹでアグレッシブな演奏なのです。メル・コリンズのSAX soloとイアン・ウォーレスのバスドラがいやが上にも聴く者の心を捕らえて離さない。私がＬＰで初めて聴いたとき、総毛立ってしまいました。私にとっての「２１st.…」は、この演奏になりました。

クリムゾン史上、もっとも”黒い”ノリが全体を支配している奇妙なライヴ盤。荒い音質、ささくれだった演奏からはメンバー間の齟齬が直接伝わってくるよう。完璧主義者のフリップはさぞかし苦々しく思ってたに違いない。ただし逆にこの不釣合いなグルーヴ感が、ある意味今作を七十年代クリムゾンの中で最もキャッチーな音にしている、と言えないこともないかもしれない。メルツバウこと秋田昌美は若き日に今作を聴いてノイズに目覚めたそうだがさもありなん。クリムゾンという巨大生物が奇形化してゆく瞬間を垣間見れるという意味で、貴重なドキュメントだろう。

一言で言ってしまうとタイトルどおり「音質はどうしようもなく酷いが、キングクリムゾンのライブアルバムの中ではこれがベスト」という感じ。もはや音が割れるどころではないほどに音がぐちゃぐちゃになっている。もともとがヘビーな演奏とは言え、これはそれを更にぐちゃぐちゃにしてしまった感がある。しかし、どの曲もベストというに相応しい緊張感をもった演奏が続く。何かふっきれたのだろうか、それとも崩壊寸前なのだろうか、わからないが、そんな何かが起こりそうなエネルギーが満ち溢れた演奏は聴く者を圧倒する。また、即興として演奏されたPeoriaも最高である。これを聴くためだけにこのアルバムを買っても、間違いは無い。元々キングクリムゾンのライブは良質であるが、その中でも飛びぬけて凶悪かつスリリングな名盤だ。
