彼らを産んだプログレ・ブームがそうであったように、イエスも一時的なバンドで終わると思われていた。しかしイエスはプログレ・ブーム終焉後も生き残り、30年にも渡るキャリアの間に14人ものメンバーを生み出し、一時は大西洋をまたがって2つのバンドが存在したことさえあった。
今回登場の5枚組ボックス・セットはロック史上最も成功したバンドのひとつであるイエスの全盛期をまとめたものである。同世代に活躍したELPやキング・クリムゾンがジャズやクラシック、アヴァンギャルド的要素を取り込んで強力なサウンドを作り上げたのに対し、イエスはストラビンスキー、ビートルズ、伝統的ジャズ、フィフス・ディメンション、ポール・サイモンと多様な要素を盛り込み、飽くことなく先進的な音楽性を追求していった。その結果彼らの音楽は比類なき幅広い音楽性を誇ることになったのである。初期の代表曲「Yours Is No Grace」、「Starship Trooper」、「I've Seen All Good People」、「Roundabout」とともに、

『Relayer』からの名曲を収録。しかし後期の作品にも名曲は多い。予想だにしなかった1980年のジョン・アンダーソンとリック・ウェイクマンの脱退後、バグルスのトレヴァー・ホーンとジェフ・ダウンズを迎えて製作された
『Drama』。アンダーソンが復帰し、トレヴァー・ホーンと新ギタリスト、トレヴァー・レビンによる共同プロデュースの
『90125』は驚異的な大ヒットとなりシングル「Owner Of A Lonely Heart(ロンリー・ハート）」はナンバー・ワン・ヒットにもなった。90年代の
『Talk』と
『The Ladder』も多様な音楽性を誇った秀作だ。

The Ladder. It's a compelling musical vision that's almost utopian, sprinkled with a half-dozen previously unreleased tracks and the CD debut of their epic 1972 reworking of Paul Simon's "America." Chris Welch and Bill Martin's comprehensive and insightful notes are introduced by film director and longtime Yes fan Cameron Crowe, who reminisces about his early days writing about the band.
