ピーター・ガブリエルが『so』までに築きあげたものの集大成が全て詰まったアルバム。それまでもチャート受けしないすばらしい曲を送り出してきたが、そこに人々が注目できる時期に来たのだろうか？
スレッジハンマーやビッグタイムなど面白い作りのビデオクリップも手伝ってビッグヒットを放つ。
しかしin your eyesなどの名曲はいまだにピーターがコンサートのトリで演奏するような曲であり、アフリカンな民族音楽との融合を見事に具現させたガブリエルならではの曲と言えると思う。
そういうテイストはピーター・ガブリエルをおいて他に持っている人を捜すのは難しい。
まさに魂を癒すことが出来る作品。

「スレッジハンマー」「Don't give up」などお馴染みのメガヒットを多数生み出した名作。以前のエキセントリックなイメージを覆す“渋い”顔ジャケットからもわかるとおり音楽性はよりポピュラーなものへと形を変えながらもより深い情念を感じさせる感慨深い作品となった。今回のリマスター化に際して曲順が本人の意向ということで変更されているけど、個人的には元のままのほうが良かったかも。特に後半のイメージが全く変わってしまい、ちょっと違和感が・・・。

その後 US と UP が制作されているものの、このアルバムを超えることは本人ですらできるものではない。この作品はガブリエルの頂点であることのみならず、ロック･ミュージックの頂点でもあり、場合によっては現代音楽の頂点であると断言できるかもしれない。真摯な、真実や絶対的なものに対する憧れや愛といったものが非常に素直に表現されている。

この作品に関しては美しいメロディもさることながら、リズムにも注目したい。僕はこの作品をポップ･ミュージックに触れる際のひとつの基準として捉えている。これは、英国･西欧における真理探究、近代合理主義的な精神が80年代に音楽という形をとって現れたものなのだと僕は捉えている。そうすることで他のアジア、アフリカのポップの世界との対比が明確にできるようになる。!<B!!R>「クリムゾン･キングの宮殿」「Sgt. ペパーズ」「The Wall」などに比べて本作は過小評価されている、すでに忘れられてしまった感があるが、「スレッジ・ハマー」「ドント･ギブ･アップ」などのヒットを放ったポップな作品「だった」などと片付けられてはならない。
