80's誰もが愛し、熱狂したTHE　BOSS：ブルース・スプリングスティーン、そして十数年ぶりのwith“E-STREET　BAND”．．．。彼も年を取り、そしてまた自分も若くはないことを突きつけられた気がした。マイ元気ソングとしてのスプリングスティーンに対して、『トンネル・オブ・ラブ』以降、メッセージ性のみが強まり、音楽そのものに激しい昂ぶりを感じられずにいた。今までボスの不甲斐なさを嘆いたいたが、そうではなかった。自分が若気を引きずっていただけ。『THE RISING』は“昂ぶり”の代わりに“秘めた熱い思い”を教えてくれた。いつまでも“昂ぶり”だけの馬鹿親父ではいられない。それでもお勧めは『MARY'S PLACE』『THE RISING』。やっぱりＢ・スプリングスティーンとE-STREET　BANDは私たちの青春、クラレンス・クレモンズのサックスを聞いたときには涙が溢れました。

Ｅストリートバンドとのスタジオ録音アルバムとしてはなんと１８年ぶりの新作だ。
昨年のテロに触発されたアルバムということで、ものすごく愛国的なものだったら嫌だな、という不安があった。
しかし、｢エンプティ･スカイ｣を聞くと、そんな不安は杞憂だったことが分かる。あくまで淡々と、深い内省の歌である。

このアルバムにあるのは、政治的なメッセージではなく、リスナー個人の内面に訴えかけるエモーションだ。

今までの彼は、アメリカの世相を切り取り、それを曲にすることで共感を得、BOSSと呼ばれる存在になった。ベトナム戦争の傷跡に悩み、不況のどん底をうたった「Born In The USA」さえも、彼が力強くシャウトすることで、アメリカに生まれたことをたたえる歌にすりかえられていった。そんな彼が、私生活の破綻や、Eストリートバンドとの決別など、’８０年代の末から’９０年代にかけての迷走から抜け出し、歌うことの意義を再確認し、等身大の自分を表現し始めたのが、前作のニューヨークライブであった。その流れで行なわれたレコーディングセッション中に起こったのが同時多発テロ、アフガンへの報復攻撃。当然の如く、多くの曲がリライトされ、書き加えられたようだ。このアルバムはEストリートバンドとの１８年ぶりのレコーディングが話題になっているが、それは全く本質ではない。このアルバムでブルースはロックンロールもシャウトもしていない。ひたすら、人の素晴らしさ、人と接することの素晴らしさを訴えかけている。彼だからこそ伝えられるメッセージ。彼だからこそ説得力を生む言葉。これは彼が作った偉大な癒しのアルバムである。
