One Nation Under a Groove remains Funkadelic's most provocative release, as well as one of the funkiest long-players released in the disco era. The band vamps on a world where people of different color play each other's songs ("Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!"), lose their inhibitions (the classic title track), and bond together with the glue of shared secrets (the wonderful "Groovallegiance"). Standout: the slow-grooved "Into You," in which a lover vows to stay true or a patriot pledges devotion to a new flag--take your pick. You might think that a complex and moving ode to commitment is out of place on an album with such political overtones, but it's not. 1978年発表。
パーラでは　"Mothership Connection(76)"　"P-Funk Earth Tour(77)"
ファンカでは　"Hardcore Jollies(76)"　"Kidd Funkadelic(76)"　あたり、
70年代中盤の P-Funk 絶頂期の傑作群に続く作品。

オーバー・ドーズなキレっぷりも落ち着き、凡作と評するファンもいますが、
いやあ、どうでしょう？

確かにこのアルバムは、ユーモアが少ない。
内容は不真面目でも、ＢＰＭの低い、アーシーな、「渋い」楽曲が多い。
ジョージの変態ボーカルも、比較的、控えめ。

しかし、これが効く。
アルバムの白眉 "Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!" のタイトルに
答えを求めるのは短絡かもしれませんが、「そろそろお遊びは終わりだぜ」的
な、ガッツリ構えた本気感がカッコ良すぎ！
P-Funkが、ただのファンク・バンドでは無いことを思い知らせてくれます。

凡作どころか、ロック・ファンにもおすすめできるP-Funkベストの一枚！
最初に聴くなら、まずこれからお願いします！

ファンカデリックというとパーラと比べてギターサウンドがどうのといいますが、そうした特徴づけ＆関連付けは置いとくとして、単刀直入にいうとUncle Jam~と並ぶ、聞き易ファンカの代表盤です。踊れます。“はーりぃうぅー”にはちょっと脱力しますが、これもP-Funkの良さといえば良さ。ちなみに気に入った方は、One Nation~の12"シングル盤をレコード屋さんで探してみてください。長尺で楽しめます。

Funkadelicを代表する誉れ高い永遠の名曲1を含む代表作アルバム。同曲でP-Funkは全世界のファンカティアー達の団結を高らかと宣言する、などと書くとヘビーでシリアスな曲と思われるかもしれない、けれど1はいたって軽快なリズムにラテン風のパーカッションが絡みギターも軽めでいたって楽しい曲である。

　2は実にクールなリズムとしゃべりで始まるが、途中からカリブ風に可愛らしくアレンジされたさびの入ってくる魅力的なファンクナンバー。
　3はおなじみ泥臭ギターぷんぷんのブギー。「ファンクバンドにはロックは演れない、なんて言ってんのは誰だぁー？」という歌詞にはロックを作ったのは黒人達であるという誇りが感じられる。

　4はFunkadelic独特のドロドロスローファンク。8は基本的にこれの??プライズであり、両者ともに実にヘドロヘドロしている。まさにＰだけにしかつくれない世界だろう。
　5は黒さたっぷりのバラードで女性コーラス陣が活躍。しかしこんな曲でもギターがノイジーなのが彼ららしい。

　6は70年代後期のライブではオープニングに採用されていた曲。幾分速めのリズムにソウルフルな歌が絡んできてなかなかのもの。特に曲の最後で展開が全く変わり興奮する。できればライブバージョンで聴いて欲しい。
　7はヘビメタファンク。ギターの重いこと重いこと。速いリズムがシャープに切り込んでくる。まあ、格好良いったらない。

　8は言わずと知れた名曲のお得なライブバージョン。アナログ盤ではアルバムにおまけとして入っているシングルに収録されていた。
　Pedro Bellのジャケットアートも頂点を極めていて、これだけでも価値が高い。

　バラエティーに富みすぎて良く分らない、という人もいるかもしれないが。しかし、この多様性こそがまさにディープで楽しいFuｎkadelicの世界なのである。
