   チック・コリアといえば、なにはともあれ本作を聴かなければ話にならない。リターン・トゥ・フォーエヴァーに代表される72年以降と違って、68年録音の本作当時、チックはシリアスなジャズ・ピアニストだった。そしてその存在を強力にアピールしたのが本作だった。これはチックにとって初のピアノ・トリオ作品であり、ミロスラフ・ヴィトウス＆ロイ・ヘインズを伴ったトリオで、スピード感満点の鮮烈な演奏を繰り広げている。タッチの美しさ、正確なリズム感、切れ味鋭いソロ、アイディアの豊富さ、すべてが素晴らしいの一語だ。はじめてこのアルバムを聴いた時、それまでのピアノ・トリオにはない斬新性とチックならではのオリジナリティに驚嘆したものだが、時間が経過してもそれは色あせない。その後、人気作・話題作を次々と発表して人気者になったチックだけど、ここに聴かれる研ぎ澄まされたシャープな感覚の演奏こそ、彼の原点である。オリジナルLPは5曲入りだったが、現在出ているCDは13曲入り。追加曲の多さも魅力である。（市川正二）


Album Description

This adventurous yet lyrical trio LP was Chick Corea's career breakthrough album, establishing him as a significant pianist and composer. Over three days in March 1968, Corea recorded with Miroslav Vitous and Haynes (they have since reunited many times over past 34 years) and produced a total of 13 great performances only five of which were used on the original albums. The material ranged from soon-to-be Corea classics like "Matrix" and "Windows" to extended improvised pieces like the title tune to creative interpretations of Monk's "Pannonica" and "My One And Only Love".

Newly remixed and remastered in 24-bit, this milestone session is complete on this CD and sounds better than ever.

とても人気のあるピアニスト、チック・コリア(pf)が生んだ最高傑作が本作品「Now He Sings, Now He Sobs」であると思う。

1968年の録音なので、その後の彼を評価していないように見えてしまうカモ知れないが、日本人が制作したアブストラクトな「Circle」での熱演や、ECMに残した「Piano Improvisations Vol.1 and Vol.2」の美しさもこよなく愛している。

でも、やはり「Now He Sings, Now He Sobs」には敵わないと思う。

その中でも「Steps-What Was」で、5:00頃からのロイ・ヘインズ(ds)ドラムソロに続き、待ちかねたように、チック･コリアとミロスラフ・ヴィトウス(b)が7:33頃から登場する。この辺りには何時聴いてもゾクゾクとしてしまいます。ベーシストの熱演が光る。

キーボードも嗜み，今やジャズにさほど興味のない人でも名前くらいは知っているジャズ演奏家の代表格となったチック・コリア。そんなやや軽めの経歴にもかかわらず巨匠として珍重されている理由の大半は，1968年に発表された，このあまりに衝撃的な出世作の賜物である。

　本盤はもともと，LP２枚に分けて発売された。しかし，CD化の際に完全版にまとめられている（完全版でないものもあるので，注意）。専門化が進んだ今でこそ，苦もなく急速調を弾き仰せるピアノ弾きは珍しくないが，本盤が出た当時，これほど円く軽いタッチで，淀みなく急速調を弾きこなすピアノ弾きは皆無であり，本盤を耳にしたリスナーはみな驚愕し，この若き逸材に瞠目したものであった。

　15分近くに渡って超絶技巧の限りを尽くし!，壮大な二幕の抒情詩を展開する6を筆頭に，全編を支配する壮大なコンセプション。現代のピアニストの技巧水準と比べても見劣りしない超絶的なテクニック。それらが，この若き逸材の輝かしい才能の煌めきを高らかに謳う。鞭のようにしなやかに，そしてシャープに寄り添うロイ・ヘインズの太鼓と，スリリングにピアノと絡み合うヴィトウスのベースがまさしく三位一体となり，些かも中だるみすることなく，主役の意匠に的確な輪郭を付与する。三者の相互供応は巨大な統一感を生成し，聴き手の耳へと押し寄せる。そのスリルと輝きは四半世紀を経過した今なお，些かも失われることなく，ジャズ・トリオの一つの理想型を指し示しているのである。

約30年前に聴きまくっていたLPを、30年ぶりに改めてCDで聴いてみた。

いきなりの驚愕。こんなに凄いグルーヴだったのか！しかも、3人の生楽器の生演奏でここまでやっていたとは！「グルーヴ」という言葉をそう簡単に使ってはいかんと反省。

後にReturn To Foreverで聴かれることになるフレーズやコード進行が随所に現れる。同時に、2年後のチックのソロに聴かれるリリシズムも、この作品で十分に披露されているではないか！

この数年後、チックはReturn to Foreverを、ヴィトウスはWeather Reportを結成する。そういう意味でも、ジャズの新たな夜明けを暗示する奇跡的な傑作だった。

ピアノとベースとドラムが対等にinteractするピアノ・トリオの最高傑作（の1つ）。全音楽人必聴。
