ケニー・ランキンは、昔から好きなミュージシャンの一人だ。なにしろこの約35年のキャリアを誇るニューヨーカーは、ジョアン・ジルベルトとバーデン・パウエルの流儀を受け継いでいる数少ない米国人。少なくともギターの弾き語りでボサ・ノヴァっぽい曲をやらせたら、マイケル・フランクスよりずっと巧い。僕は、安っぽいボサ・ノヴァもどきのAORが氾濫している昨今の音楽市場に辟易している音楽ファンなので、なおさらケニーに肩入れしたくなる。もっとも、本作はジャズ系プレイヤーが脇を固めていて、ケニーがギターを弾いているのは(10)のみ。この点には不満を覚えるが、柔和で甘美な歌声は衰えていないし、トミー・リピューマのプロデュースなので、高級ソファの座り心地のような快適さを味わうことができる。収録曲はお約束のビートルズの(8)をはじめ、ジャズやポップの名曲ばかり。ケニーは、いわば名曲の優れた翻訳家だ。なお9月の来日公演は、弾き語りとのこと。なおさら期待が膨らむ。 (渡辺亨) --- 2002年09月号

Kenny Rankin Album も古いアルバムだが、今聞いても新鮮な輝きを持っている。時が経ち、僕は彼のことをすっかり忘れていた。僕も人生を重ねた。3年前ジャズクラブで演奏するベーシストと話をする機会があった。彼はケニーのボーカルを絶賛していた。帰宅し、アマゾンで検索した。このアルバムはタイミングよく発売されたばかりだった。届いたケニーのＣＤを聴くと、1曲目からふーっとため息が出た。人生の光と影を感じた。内省的になる大人の音楽。自分の過去を振り返ることが出来た。

Chris McBride，Lewis Nashのリズムをバックに，スタンダード・ナンバーを渋く歌った好演盤。Chris Potter，Roy Hargrove等のジャズ系ソロイストを配するところなど，Michael Franksの初期のパターンと同様のアプローチは，プロデューサーTommy Lipumaならではであるが，少々地味。歌唱はなかなかの佳演ぞろいであるが，なかでも軽くフェイクする"Round Midnight"が素晴らしい。
