前作MIND BOMBも傑作であるが個人的にはこのDUSKこそが最高傑作である。
前作MIND BOMBは元スミスのJohnny Marrらを率いて話題もセールスも飛び抜けて成功を収めた。
現に日本での来日公演は連日超満員、wowowでの放映もあったくらいである、
しかしMatt Johnsonにとっては良かったのであろうか？
THE THEはMatt Johnsonのバンドである。

彼がフロントマンとして前面に出てはじめて語れるものがある、
そんな前作の成功と傑作、話題と中傷を振り払うが如く生まれたアルバムである。
全曲Matt Johnsonのクレジットで記され他のメンバーは演奏以外では一切干渉しない入魂の力作になっている。
DUSKという名前の通り、明るくは決してない。
Aztec CameraやEverything But The Girlのように清く正しく美しいアコースティックではなく、
あくまで薄暗くジメジメした恐怖さえ漂わせる重厚なアコースティックである、
これぞMatt Johnsonの真骨頂である、
一日疲れ果て病んだ気持ちを癒すのではなく、
何か想いを振り払うときにお聞きするのをお勧めします。

出世作の「INFECTED」、次作の「MIND BOMB」を経て、３年周期に発表された彼らの最高傑作。今作ではMatt JohnsonのVOが前面に出て、シンプルで繊細なアコースティック気味のサウンドと相俟ってTHE THE独自のブルース、ソウルミュージックを展開している。アコースティック楽器を用いても決して「爽やか」ではなく、「夜・黄昏」というイメージが似合う音楽かな。Matt Johnsonの歌は内省的で、優しく切ないが、同時に強烈に「個」を主張していて、ヒリヒリした感触も併せ持っている。「True Happiness This Way Lies」「Love Is Stronger Than Death」「Lonely Planet」が秀逸。これは再発盤ですが、ジャケットはオリジナルのイラストに思い入れがあるので、あちらの方が好みですね。

マット・ジョンソンは囁くように叫んでいる。
マット・ジョンソンは誰もが心に抱える、口に出せない重荷を、痛みを、
わかりやすく代弁し問いかける。
自らに、そして世界中に。

「真の自由は心の欲望からの自由／そして真の幸福はそれより見出される」
「皆は世界中の何が間違っているか知っている／でも僕は自分の中で何が起こってるのさい知りやしない」
「世界を変えられないなら自分を変えてみろ／自分を変えられないなら世界を変えてみろ」

。。。涙でた。悲しいからじゃない。

ジョニーマーらバックの演奏は完璧。
やや古めかつダークなサウンドなのになぜか明日への希望を感じる音。

この素晴らしいアルバムに出会えた事を生涯感謝し誇りに思いたいです。。。。
