Deep Forestをちゃんと聴いたのは、今作からだった。
Ambient系と、ワールド・ミュージックが好きなことから行き着いた。
そういう順路で来たので、Freedom Cryが彼らの作だとわかって、ちょっとびっくり。
また同様の理由からか、初期からのファンだった人は
このアルバムで評価が変化するようだが、自分はこれがベスト。

コラボレートものが大概おすすめ曲だけど、個人的には3,5,6,9,10がお気に入り。
引用元はアジア諸地域ということで、Soul Elevatorは
イスラム辺りかなぁと思いそっちの知り合いに聞かせてみると、
ほとんど原型のまま取り込んでいるらしい。
元ちとせ参加のWill You Be Readyも、そのままというか、
Deep Forestのほうが素材のほうに合わせている感じがする。
奥さんが日本人であることが関係しているのかは知らないが、
とにかく前作までと比べても非常にあっさり料理しているような気が。

そのかわり、味付けは非常に現代的になった。
別物といっても過言で無いほどに。
これまでは、Deep Forestの演奏自体にどこかアフリカっぽい
リズム・雰囲気があったが、払拭された。
ここが筋金入りのファンを戸惑わせたかな。
でも多くのレビュアーが述べるように、
Deep Forestを感じさせる部分がなんとなく残っている。
おそらく彼らの活動の根底にある意思が不変だからだろうと思う。
使うツール・表現が変わっても精神が受け継がれていれば、
彼らの変わらぬアイデンティティを感じることができるんじゃないかな。
っていうか「いいね、これ」と思える時点で問題などないけれど。

まぁ、まずは聴いてみて、戸惑う人は、違うアーティストの作と
とらえるほうがいいかも。
