同じタイトルの日本盤はＬＰ発売当時の５曲のみですが、こちらは、曲順を替えて、しかも３曲プラスされている。日本盤を持っている人は「スカイスクレーパー」のエンディングを聴き比べて下さい。日本盤は短く完奏するのですが、こちらは、少し長く、テーマを繰り返しフェードアウトするのです。どちらも魅力的なので、両方買わざるを得なくなるという、罪な１枚なのです！デオダートは１枚目の「ツァラトゥーストラ」で有名になりましたが、クラシックの原曲を聴き慣れていた私には、抵抗がありました（何せ、原曲は約４０分の交響詩なので）がこちらの「ラプソディー・イン・ブルー」や「亡き王女の為のパヴァーヌ」は、原曲の魅力を損なうことなく演奏しており、いっぺんに気に入りました。そして、輸入盤でこのクレジットを見たら、やはり買ってしまい、聴いてビックリでした。デオダート自身は、どちらのヴァージョンが気に入っているのでしょう？しかも安いので、買いでしょう。３０年位前のアルバムゆえ、ややチープな音と感じる部分もあるかもしれませんが、それも逆に魅力と感じるのは、贔屓目な見方なのかな？

デオダートといえば「プレリュード」があまりにも有名であるが、こちらもかなり評判が高い。なによりブラジル的なノリの良さ、Ｂ・コブハム、Ｓ・クラークなどリズム・セクションが強烈で思わず体が動いてしまう曲のオンパレードである。その中で「亡き王女のためのパバーヌ」のようなクラシック系や「サテンの夜」など選曲の意外性がまたいい。この後ライブ盤を出して移籍するが、ＭＣＡでは二番煎じ的なアレンジが多くやや精彩を欠いた。しかし前作と本作はフュージョン史に残る彼の代表作である。

良い音楽は時代を越えて聴かれていきますが、エミール・デオダートの大ヒットしたこのアルバムもそのような要素を一杯持っている音楽です。我々の頃はクロス・オーヴァーと言っていました。フュージョンに入れても良いのですが、もっと多用な音楽スタイルを内在しています。

1973年の録音ですから、キング･クリムゾンらのブリティッシュ・ロックの影響も受けていますし、マイルス・ディヴィスが電子楽器を使用した「ビッチェズ・ブリュー」のスタイルもそこに聴き取れます。出自であるブラジルのラテン音楽、特にボサ・ノヴァに刺激を受けているのが良く分かりますね。

「Super Strut」の疾走感がステキで、聴いているうちに心地よさが身体中を駆け巡ります。ソウルフルな演奏が8分以上展開されますので、躍動感に身を任せている内にエンディングへ突入する快感を味わえます。

ガーシュイン作曲の「Rhapsody In Blue」のスピード感がたまりません。当時よく聴きましたが、今でも新鮮な驚きと感動に包まれています。音楽ジャンルを越えたサウンドですので多くの人に再認識してほしいと思っているのですが。

「Slyscrapers」のパーカッションによるリズムのきれの良さが秀逸です。ブラスの咆哮が、チェイスやシカゴ、ブラッド・スウェット＆ティアーズのようでもあり、あの時代を代表するサウンドのエッセンスのような快適さが感じとれます。ブラス・ロックという音楽ジャンルにも近いですね。

「Pvane For a Dead Princess（亡き王女のためのパヴァーヌ）」は、ラヴェルの原曲の抒情性と神秘性を併せ持つ演奏になっています。高貴な香りが漂う演奏でクラシックファンにもオススメできます。
