   ローマ帝国時代、当時の大将軍クラサスに対して、勇敢にも反乱軍を組織し立ち上がった1人の奴隷、スパルタカスの生涯を描いた、巨匠キューブリック監督の一大スペクタクル史劇である。
   本作は、オリジナル監督の降板というアクシデントにより、急きょキューブリックに白羽の矢が立った、いわば代役監督作だ。撮影時には数々の意見の衝突があったといわれているが、破格の製作費と一流のスタッフ、キャストらに恵まれ、これまでにないダイナミックな演出を試みている。

ローマ帝国時代を舞台に、「奴隷反乱軍とローマ軍」との壮絶な戦い『スパルタクスの反乱』の小説を、「スタンリー・キューブリック監督」が、１９６０年に製作映画化した大スペクタクル歴史劇作品。
【奴隷のスパルタカス（主演：カーク・ダグラス）はバタイアタス（主演：ピーター・ユスチノフ）の剣闘士養成所に売られ剣術の技を磨く。そして、仲間と助け合い反乱を起こして養成所を脱走するが・・・・・・。】
統制を取る「スパルタカス」を首領とする奴隷の集団は、次々と奴隷を解放し「奴隷大軍団」となりローマへの進撃を開始する。人海戦術と人馬一体で自由を求め、強力なローマ軍と戦いに挑む壮絶な戦闘シーンは圧巻！
また、ラストシーンのスパルタカスの十字架の下に立った妻・バリニア（主演：ジーン・シモンズ）が子供を高くさし上げ、「自由の身」になった事を知らせる展開は、自由を勝ち取った「勝利」と思うが・・・・・・。
（余談：歴史上、この大規模の「スパルタクス反乱」以降には、奴隷の待遇は向上したとされていますが・・・・・・。）

この二作品を比較したレビューが多いですが、スパルタカスに評価が偏っているようです。しかし、スパルタカスの主題は自由と解放（特に奴隷制）、ベン・ハーの主題は憎悪と赦し（愛、又は憎悪からの解放）と、異なった主題を扱っているわけですから、たとえほぼ同じ時期を扱っている映画であったとしても共に観る価値は十二分にあります。どちらか一つということではなく、是非両方とも楽しんでください！（『十戒』は神への畏怖と人間の堕落を描いているので、また違う主題です。但しこの二作品に比べると演出の技術面では劣ります。）
