五社英雄監督の「高知女衒モノ」。宮尾登美子原作映画化中で最も完成度が高い。立体的な人物造形と明晰に構成された脚本。五社監督の演出は、やり過ぎるとどんどん空回りして、「大旗振り回しすぎ」に陥ることもあるのだが、ケレンをツボを抑えたポイントに留め、バランスのとれた本作は秀逸。池上季美子がとても綺麗で、抑えた演技で重厚な表現を結実した緒形拳の芝居がとてもいい。なんだか、泣けます。

五社英雄監督作品はけっこう好きなんですが、宮尾登美子原作３部作でも特に「陽暉楼」は気に入ってます。日本映画の芸妓モノはこの映画が
火をつけたようなものではないかと思ってます。池上季実子＆浅野温子のとっくみあいは必見！！

重厚な美術、音楽、魅せることにこだわったケレン味溢れる演出。そして、まさしく体当たりの激情で演じる女優陣も素晴らしい。見応え充分です。
