アメリカの前衛音楽の旗手の1人であったジョン・ケージが鍵盤楽器のために書いた初期の作品(1935年から48年まで)を弾いたキルステインの録音が、2枚組CDとして登場。


内容 (「CDジャーナル・レビュー」より)

ケージの最も初期の鍵盤音楽。ピアノ、プリペアド・ピアノ(ピアノの弦にゴム、木、金属etc.を挟み込む=プリパレーションしたピアノ。“プリペイドピアノ”ではありません!~)及びトイ・ピアノのための音楽。1935~48年、つまりケージがシェーンベルクに師事した修行時代の曲から、自分の道を見出してゆく時期の曲。良い耳を使ってなされたプリパレーションが生み出す、複雑なピッチを響かせる一音の空間性、そしてその音を構成して作られる音楽、その両者のバランスこそがプリペアド・ピアノの音楽の面白さだが、キルステインは(一音の魅力も十分にあるが)よく語る演奏をする。一音の空間性より音楽の語りが先に立つ。音楽に集中力があり、細部までよく歌われ、コントラストや効果があり、時に神秘的。飽きることなく“音楽”として楽しませてくれる。弱奏の表現力はキルステインの魅力。なかなか魅力的な演奏。そしてこのCD、「Dream(夢)」で静かに美しく終わる……。 (伊藤祐二) --- 2002年09月号

　このレコードの最大の特徴は、ケージ監修(もしくは承認・推薦)のもとでのプリペアド・ピアノの音がきけることでしょう。実際にプリペアド・ピアノのセッティングをしたことのある方はご存知だと思いますが、楽譜指示(ピアノの弦のどの部分からどの距離のところに何を挟むこと)に従おうとしても、ケージが思い描いていた音が何なのかは実は薮の中なのです。たとえば「洗濯バサミ」がどのような材質のどのような大きさなのかによっても得られる音は変わりますが、最も難しいのは弦に挟む位置で、ピアノにはサイズがいろいろあるため、結局は演奏者(もしくは調律者?)が自分で音色を決断しなければなりません。

　1990年代には、次々にプリペアド・ピアノを演奏したCDが発売されましたし、今でも続々と新譜がリリースされています。ケージのピアノ曲全曲の録音に挑戦中のピアニストもいます。それらの盤を聞いてプリペアド・ピアノの魅力に目覚めた方もいらっしゃるでしょうけれど、評判倒れと見放した方もいらっしゃると思います。しかし、評価を定める前に、本レコードだけは、何が何でも絶対聞いておいて欲しいと、ケージ・ファンを代表して強く訴えたいのです。

　ケージ自身によるプリペアド・ピアノの録音は、1961年に≪Amores≫を弾いているLPが発売されていますが、本レコードでのカースティンが作った音は、それに極めてよく似ているように感じられます。1970年以前に、ケージのプリペアド・ピアノ、あるいは初期作品のアンソロジーが録音され、発売された例は他にありません。貴重な記録であるだけではなく、ケージ自身が演奏者を誉めちぎっているという意味でも、まずはこの録音からケージの音を聞いていきたいものです。
