初めてザ・レッド・ホット・チリ・ペッパーズが体にネオンを塗りたくり、自分のソーセージにあぶなっかしく靴下をぶらさげて登場した時、最も忠実なファンク・メタルのファンでも、このバンドが20年経つ今もあまり変わらないファッションで活動を続けていることを予期することなどとても出来なかった。様々な悲劇と個人生活の激動を乗り越えて、このカリフォルニアのカルテットの8枚目のアルバムが登場。いつものように、ちゃんとビジネスしている。そしてこのビジネスというのが、決まってとってもいいのである。タイトル・トラックのBy the Wayは、スラップ・ベースにホワイト・ボーイのラップの中継ぎがはいるパワフルで傷だらけの1曲だ。Universally Speakingは、シンガー アンソニー・キーディスの故郷デトロイトに捧げる汗臭いソウルフルな曲である。Lemon Trees on Mercuryは1984年のFreaky Styleyからの借用じゃないかと思うくらい奇妙に似ている。このバンドの一つのジャンルに偏らないサイドを見てみよう。ラテン・フレイバーのCabronやムードたっぷりのVenice Queenなどがあげられる。しかしなんといっても驚かされたのは、Tearである。このみごとなザ・ビーチ・ボーイズへのオマージュは、ザ・チリ・ペッパーズの発展を阻まれた終身刑が免除される日が来ることを予感させる。

2002年発表の8thアルバム。前作「Californication」はジョン・フルシアンテの復帰第一作であり、美しいメロディがフィーチャーされてはいたが、その枯れたサウンドはあくまで「Blood Sugar Sex Magik」や、バンド脱退期間のジョンのソロ･アルバムの延長線上にあるものだったと思う。しかし今作には「Californication」に見られたような、枯れた諦念や傷だらけのたたずまいといった要素は薄れ、より前進した内容になっている。曲によっては深いディレイやリヴァーブが施されたサウンド・プロダクションは、より洗練され多様性を増した印象。なんといっても素晴らしいのはジョンのギターとコーラス･ワーク。決してテクニックをひけらかすような派手なプレイはせず、ひたすら曲を良いものにする、歌に寄り添ったメロディアスなプレイに徹している。
某誌のインタヴューでジョンは、「こんな不穏な世の中だからこそ、みんなに安心とか希望を与えるような、美しい音楽を作りたいと思った。そのために全力を尽くしたよ。」と語っているが、そのとおりの内容になっていると思う。音楽としての高い完成度が、生きることへの力強い肯定性を感じさせてくれる。「By The Way」や「Universally　Speaking」の、ヴィデオ・クリップも素晴らしかった。

今回のアルバムはきっと意見が凄く別れるのではないか？と思います。
今作は前作『カリフォルニケイション』の雰囲気を引き継いで
更にメロディアスにした感じの曲目が多いから。
昔のハードな感じが好きだった人にはちょっと物足りないんではないでしょうか？
しかし、聴き込んでるうちに凄く嵌ると思います。

ハード過ぎず、と言うだけでハードな部分が無くなっている訳じゃなくて
メロディアスな部分が目立っているだけだから。
基本的にはレッチリ独特のサウンドは充分健在！
タイトルナンバーの1曲目『By The Way』
これを聴いて、心が動かない訳がない！
個人的には4曲目『Dosed』には泣かされました。
メロ良過ぎです。

私は昔のハードなレッチリが好きだった人間ですが、
このアルバムはそれにも劣らぬアルバムに仕上がっていると思います。
カリフォルニケイションよりも好きですね。

たいまつみたいなヘルメットをかぶってライブしたり、「靴下一丁」でアビイロードを横断したり、アヤイヤイヤイヤイ！とシャウトしたり、そういう暴れ者ぶりも今は昔となり、前作「カリフォルニケーション」から増えてきた歌心あふれるナンバーが、ここへきて楽曲のほとんどをしめるようになった。ゴリゴリのファンクはなりを潜めた。一般に、ベテラン･バンドから激しい曲が減ってくると、「丸くなったなあ」と文句が出る事が多い。雑誌などにいくら「音楽的成長」などと書かれていようと、やはりダメな場合はダメなものである。だが今回のレッチリのアルバムに文句を言う人はそうそういないはずだ。それだけの説得力を持つアルバムなのだ。喪失と試練を繰り返してここまで転がり続けてきた傷だらけの彼!
だから表現できる精神的な深さ・重さが、静かでエモーショナルな曲群に満ちている。同様に、あからさまなファンク･ナンバーは無いものの、これまで彼らが獲得してきた音楽的な要素は失われることなく各楽曲の空気を作っているのだ。聴いて涙をあふれさせる人もいるかもしれない。あまりにも名盤！
