Black Crowesのアルバムの中では一番地味な感じがします。アップテンポな曲が無くてミディアムテンポな曲ばかりなのでそう感じてしまうのだが、ゆったりとした豪快なノリはさすがと思います。聞いていくうちにだんだんと好きになっていくアルバムです。１曲目が良いです。

いやかなり辛い。前作よりさらに凝り過ぎてあまり楽しめません。みんな才能あるの分かったからね、それをちゃんとまとめてよ。でもマーク・フォードはかなり切れてます、凄いです。せめて一曲ぐらい使ってあげたらいいのに。とは言え、まだ曲はいいねん。でも全編ロック・ミュージックと呼ぶにはちょっと。そんな中でも『Blackberry』は名曲です。

サイケデリックでファンキー。土着的で斬新。演奏はルーズかつタイト。一曲も駄曲なし。バンドの力量を存分に発揮したこの優れたアルバムが、なぜ全然売れなかったのか不思議でならない。

本作では、ブラッククロウズの持つ様々な側面のうち、特にサイケデリックな面が前面に押し出されている。実際、アルバム製作時のバンドはドラッグ漬けだったらしい。（その影響か、本作レコーディング後にリードギタリストのマーク・フォードが脱退している。）

上記したように捨て曲は一曲もないが、ことに素晴らしいのは１曲目、５曲目、７曲目、９曲目、１０曲目、１２曲目、あたりか。

その中でも、１曲目の"Under A Mountain"が特にすごい。私などは、イントロのかもし出す濃厚なサイケデリック感に、もうやられてしまう。１２曲目もサイケデリック・ロックの佳曲である。５曲目"Blackberry"は前作『アモリカ』の３曲目"High Head Blues"のようなサイケデリック・ファンクである。７曲目、１０曲目は純然たるファンク・ロックだが、その中にもほのかにマリファナの匂いが漂うように思えるのは気のせいか。９曲目はアコースティックギターによる静謐な小品である。

次作のバイ・ユア・サイドも出来のいいアルバムなのだが（ブラッククロウズに駄作なし！）、しかし私としては、あのような正統的で明快なロックンロール路線に向かわずに、本作の傾向をさらに深化したような、もっと極端にサイケデリックなアルバムを作ってもらいたかった。ドロドロにサイケデリックなアルバムを作ってもらいたかった。ブラッククロウズの力量をもってそういうアルバムを作ったとしたら、どんなに物凄い音楽が生まれていたことだろう。
