風に揺れる芥子の赤い花が、印象的なシカゴの4人組ラルトラの2002年のアルバム。

シカゴということで、すぐにトータスやシー・アンド・ケイクと比較したくなりがちだが、ラルトラのほうが、いわゆるシカゴ音響派よりもフォーク色が強いと感じる。それはおそらく彼らの音が、ポップアート的なものでは全然ないというところから来ているのではないだろうか。あくまでも音は、風景だけを描き出していく。格別にメランコリックに。類似性を感じるバンドにアイダを思いつく。彼らの歌も、とてもメランコリックだ。

今みたいにネットでの試聴が当たり前となったとき、インパクトという面ではやや弱いこういう音楽は、ダウンロードされにくいのではないか。ダウンロードは、家に居ながら即買いできるため、瞬時に強い印象をもたらす音楽が売れるようになるのだろうか。その辺は、これから先を見ていかないと明確な判断は難しいが、とりあえずラルトラのようなバンドは、それでも一向に構わず、このメランコリックな調べを奏で続けるのだろう。

分断される時間、けだるい午後の風、ラルトラは浮遊感とともに奇妙な世界へと導きます｡レディオヘッドに世界観は共通しながら、もっと暖かい音かな｡無気質な世界が展開されます｡必聴。
