数少ないパガニーニの名演。リストがピアノ用に編曲したラ・カンパネラの原曲がここにはある。ラ・カンパネラの主題も良いが、もちろん全体としてひとつのヴァイオリン協奏曲として完成しているので、ベートーヴェンなどの作品とはまた違った味が楽しめる。

そもそも録音の少ない曲であるが、そのヴィルトーゾ的な部分でカントロフが才能を遺憾なく発揮している。作曲家と演奏家の幸福な組み合わせといえるだろう。この値段でこの雰囲気を味わえれば申し分ない。第２番の第３楽章「ラ・カンパナッラ」だけでも価値があろう。ただし、特に第１番でやや音色に濁りが感じられるので星一つ減。

最初の出だしから、輝きのある音が勢い良く飛び出してきます。
スタッカートの切れ味なども相当なものですし、フレージングも十分に独特です。ただその勢いの良さが災いしてか、高音部が硬すぎると感じられるかもしれない。実演だとまた印象は違うんでしょうけれど（目は耳ほどにモノを聴くというでしょ）。

ラ・カンパネラはそんな彼の弾き方がピッタリきて面白い。
カントロフ自身が振った室内管弦楽団はかなり軽めの伴奏。
まあ、やたら重々しく大げさなフルオケの伴奏よりらしくて良い。
