何やら賞を受賞していたことは、発売当時知っていた。アファナシエフが一音一音確かめるようにゆっくり弾くことも知っていた。今回購入して、一度目聴いたときは遅いなあと綺麗な音だなあと、でもブラームスの哀愁は十分にとらえているなあと思った。何度も聴いている内に、このアファナシエフのブラームス後期ピアノ集では最高かなあと思ってきた。音が丁寧なのがいいのかな。ルプーはさわやか、バックハウスは朴訥、グールドは個性的なんだけど。今は、やっぱり、このアファナシエフが一番！

ピアノを弾くものにとって、最初に心に響く演奏とは、「刷り込み」現象に近いものが発生する。　たとえば、私にとっては、ベートーベンのソナタがルビンシュタインの演奏であり、ゴールドベルク変奏曲がグールドであり、ラフマニノフのピアノ協奏曲第２番がアシュナケージであった。　演奏家によって、曲の魅力が届くという体験は、神の啓示のように滅多にない。　

ブラームスという作曲家は、私にとって特に何も意味しない人であったが、この演奏によって私は、「初めてブラームスと出会った」。ひとつひとつの音が、ピアノの美しい音色を響かせると共に、晩年のブラームスの生活をも感じさせてくれる。　

年を取っていくことに、このような魅力が生じるのだとしたら、それは大変嬉しいことではないかと思わせる一枚だった。

もし死が眼前に垣間見られてしまったら、どうだろう？
「わたしはもう死ぬかも知れない」
「私は彼岸の縁に入り込んでいる」
こうしたヒリヒリとした心象風景にハッと気づかされる
闇と影の世界を響かせる音。

遺書代わりに作曲したとも言われるブラームス晩年の憂愁を
アファナシエフの遅めのテンポがいや増しに盛り立てる。

とはいっても、憂愁以上の憂愁以外ではないのだが・・・。

なぜ最後に「ラプソディー」なのか？
人生に対する巨大な疑問符が突き付けられる（はず）。
