クラシック音楽のＬＰを初めて自分の小遣いで買ってから二年、当時私は高校一年生にしてブルックナーの大ファンになっていた。そのブルックナーの交響曲の中では何番目に聴いたのか忘れてしまったが、取分け此の頃の私を最も夢中にさせたのが、此の第５交響曲だった。
壮大な音響、部厚い和声、二連符と三連符とを組合わせた独特のリズム、大胆な転調、何よりもモーツァルトのジュピター交響曲以来のソナタ形式と大フーガとを見事に融合させた最終楽章。此れを聴いたらばポピュラー音楽等児戯にしか見えないし、当時の私の感性にピッタリと来た音楽でもあった。
当時私を夢中にさせたその演奏は、ヨッフム指揮ドレスデン・シュターツカペレのものだったが、ＣＤ時代になってから聴いたこのマタチッチ指揮チェコpo.演奏盤は、それを凌ぐ名演だ。飽きさせないテンポの取り方、遠慮の無い楽器音の強弱の付け方、一部シャルクによる改訂版の解釈を引用してあるとは云うものの、それさえもマタチッチは純粋にブルックナーの音楽の中に見事に融合させている。将に宇宙サイズのブルックナーだ。
ブルックナーの交響曲はドイツ・オーストリア圏の指揮者でないと駄目と言う人もいるが、其の点も心配無い。何故なら、マタチッチもチェコpo.も、現在でこそスラヴ諸国に分類されているとは云うものの、本来はハプスブルク・オーストリア帝国の版図下にかつてあった地域の出身だからだ。音楽の名演も歴史と共にある、此れ以上無い程の例証が此処にある。

骨太の曲づくり、ブル５の定番ＣＤだ、と単純に思ってたのですが…。第４楽章で、少なくとも２箇所の大幅なカットがあり、終結部などでは改訂版を使っていたり（多分）しています。原典版を信奉する方は御注意を。ただ、カットのしかたは改訂版のやり方とは違うマタチッチ流のもの。改訂版の一部使用もマタチッチがあえておこなったものでしょうから、マタチッチの強烈な個性のあらわれというべきでしょうか。カットにたじろぐ面もありますが、その結果、すごい緊張感が持続していると感じました。私にとっては、やはりブル５の定番のひとつです。

　マタチッチがケルン歌劇場で指揮者としてデビューしたのは御年「１７歳」であったとのこと。その早熟な指揮者が（数字を逆にして）齢「７１歳」で気心の知れたオケ、そして得意のブルックナーで録音したのがこの５番です。第1楽章の導入部の沈んだ暗いスタートは驚きです。第２楽章は５番でもっとも早く作曲され、巷間この時代のブルックナーの苦悩が最も顕著な時期とも言われますが、この演奏はそれに捉われることなく淡々とリズムを刻み、大らかで全般にあっけらかんとした印象です。その一方、後半の２楽章は、反転、集中力を高め荘厳なコラールのフィナーレでは得難い感動をもって終結します。
　マタチッチは大柄ながらお顔はよく見ると端正な風貌、そして流儀としては、オーケストラを燃焼させる「触媒効果」は抜群、しかもそこには強い作曲者の主張と指揮者独特の哀歓が籠められているといった印象。チェコ・フィルの燻し銀の弦が熱量を徐々に蓄えていき、最後に一気に放出する過程は聞き物です。
