この曲は、オーケストラの規模も大きくオーケストレーションも綿密、複雑である。多くの評論家が６番に比べて作曲者のオーケストレーションが格段に進歩したと述べている。
それだけに、演奏、録音のどちらが悪くても、まとまりのない音になってしまう。
インバルは曲の良さを最大限に引き出すべくオーケストラをまとめ上げている。また、録音当時の８７年頃は日本コロンビア（当時のレーベル名は”ＤＥＮＯＮ”）の録音技術は世界のレコード会社でトップでありその技術がこの難曲の録音で発揮されている。
発売当時、これが決定盤の座を確保したといって良い。

しかし、その後、録音技術はさらに発達し大きなオーケストラの演奏でも個々の楽器の音が格段に良くとらえられるようになってきた。また、インバルの上を行くような演奏（ブーレーズ／クリーブランド等）も出てきている。
もはや、このＣＤが決定版とは言えないだろう。
しかし、安い。
買って損はないと思う。

・曲について
５楽章あり、それぞれの楽章に特徴がある。
マーラー好きでないと全部の楽章を好きになるのは難しいかもしれない。
なので、気に入った楽章だけを聴いてればいいと思う。
特に４楽章（夜曲）はかわいらしくて、聴きやすい。
なお、インバルはこの曲の構成的な面について”映画と同じようなもの。ある場面がすぎると、違う場面に映る。映画を見るのと同じように聴いていくものだ。”と言っていた。
ほんと彼の言うとおり場面、場面がコロコロと変わっていく曲だ。

マーラーの交響曲の中では演奏される回数が一昔より増えてきたとはいえ、「取っ付きにくい曲」なのは明らか‥。それゆえこの交響曲を「いかに面白く聴かせるか?」は指揮者の力量にある訳だ。マーラーの交響曲中で「試金石」と言われるのも頷ける‥。録音は20年以上前のものだが優秀で今聴いても聴き劣りしない。インバルの指揮は「繊細でいながら緻密」な表現で、この作品との相性も良く名盤と言ってイイが、今一歩「情感の掘り下げ」が欲しい!この指揮者のマーラーは他の作品でも「後一歩踏み込んでいれば‥」ってことがあり「惜しい演奏」が多い!「緻密な表現の掘り下げ・美しい情感」がバランス良くまとまっている演奏は「シノーポリ」の録音だろうか? 作品自体が全体の「バランス」の悪い交響曲なので演奏も難しいのだが、インバルは緻密だが表情の掘り下げがシノーポリに比してやや浅いと思う。シノーポリは演奏の完成度が高い名盤だが、まとまり過ぎて「イマイチ迫力に欠ける」かな?そうするとテンシュテットのライヴ録音を引っ張り出すしかないが、緻密さはインバル・シノーポリに及ばず。作品も中間3楽章は作曲家の最高傑作だが、両端楽章が説得力に欠けており、「第6」に匹敵する終楽章があれば「第6」を越える名作になれたかも‥?インバル・シノーポリ・テンシュテット‥3つ の名盤を合わせた様な録音が現れないかな?何とも「厄介な作品」だなこりゃ…(笑)
