   徳川2代将軍・秀忠を毒殺し、3代将軍の座に秀忠の長男・家光（松方弘樹）を推す柳生但馬守（萬屋錦之介）一派と、次男・忠長（西郷輝彦）を推す尾張大納言（三船敏郎）一派らが繰り広げる、血みどろの抗争を、当時実録ヤクザ映画の旗手として厚い支持を受けていた深作欣二監督が、まさにチャンバラ版『仁義なき戦い』といったテイストで豪華絢爛に描いた、骨太の時代劇超大作。
   多分に現代的演出と演技が劇中を占めるなか、唯一大時代的な演技を披露する名優・錦之介の圧倒的存在感が、結果として映画全体の虚構性を高めるという素晴らしい効果を生んでいるという、実に不可思議な傑作。ラストで彼が叫ぶ「夢じゃ夢じゃ！」は、当時流行語にもなるほどのインパクトがあった。柳生十兵衛に千葉真一が扮した最初の作品であり、以後この役は彼の十八番となっていくことにもなった。（的田也寸志）

この作品がとうとうDVD化されるという事で嬉しいです。この作品はとにかく萬屋錦之助さん演じる、頭脳明晰、冷静沈着な「策士」柳生但馬は圧倒的存在感。さすが！と唸らせられます。徳川内紛の争いは今観ても駆け引きの妙、罠の嵌め合いといい見応えは最高で思わず引き込まれます、千葉真一の柳生、成田　三樹夫さん演ずる異色のキャラもいい味出てます。衝撃のラストは賛否両論あるとは思いますが、超オールスターキャストによる時代劇の最高傑作には違いありません。真田広之（本作がデビュー）、志穂美悦子JAC若手コンビも出ています。

言うまでもなく、超娯楽豪華時代劇である。だので、僕が言いたいのは、敬愛する成田三樹夫氏について。甲高い声、麻呂言葉を使い、だが腕はめっぽう立つ烏丸少将文麿を怪演し、千葉真一など豪華キャストのなか、一歩も引けを取らない存在感と圧倒的アクト力を見せ付けている。それまで、ニヒルな役や、やくざのイメージが強かった三樹夫氏にこの様なキワモノをやらせた深作もすごいがそれに応え、あまりあるアクトを見せつけた三樹夫氏もすごい。唯一無二、成田三樹夫のかわりは成田三樹夫にしかできない、そんな役者だと思う。日本映画界は惜しい逸材を亡くした。彼の芝居を見るだけでも、僕にとって見る価値のある作品だ。

もうそういって差し支えないだろう、恐るべきオールスターキャストによる一大チャンバラ絵巻！
あまりの面白さに血が沸騰した、数少ない映画の一つ。
とにかく一世一代の当たり役と言える千葉真一の柳生十兵衛、そして成田三樹夫扮する剣豪の公家（超怪演！）など、怪しげで濃いキャラがこれでもかと出てくる。

世界の三船も、萬屋錦之介すらも、一人も中心になって目立ってない、ある意味集団劇になっていることが一番凄いのかも知れない。
柳生の地位向上のためなら何だってする錦之介扮する但馬守の非道なやり口も凄けりゃ、義と人情に生きる十兵衛のラストシーンのイっちゃいぶりも物凄い。
武士道の時代にこれってありなの？のまさに究極の切り返しだろう。

もうとにかくケレン味たっぷりの!大仰なチャンバラシーンがガツンガツンの、大ラスまでテンション最高潮という、楽しませるためなら何でもするぞ！の超大傑作だ！
