笑えない状況にある人、もしくは人を笑わすことが本来苦手な人が、他人の心を揺り動かし、凍えた魂をどう癒すことができるのか。その解答のひとつがこの「ヒゲの未亡人」である。高度成長期以前の日本映画や大衆音楽の世界に見られる、今ではもう失われてしまった、イノセントでスイートな日本人の心性に共感を寄せつつも、それがもうすでに失われた世界であることに気付かざるを得ない。理想は見えていても、一人で現実の人間関係にそれを反映させることは極めて困難なのである。『そんなことは分かっているわ』と傷ついたハートを抱えスカートをたくしあげステージに上がるのが、｢ヒゲの未亡人ゾラ」だ。独特のユーモアとペーソスの溢れる岸野雄一のジェントルな歌詞に、ゲイリー芦屋による、バートカラック、ロジャー・ニコルス、筒美京平などを想起させるコード進行やメロディ、アレンジを随所に盛り込んだスイートかつ優美なサウンドは、まさに、「ここにはないどこか」で、だが、旅行のパンフレットやスーパーのチラシを眺めたり、エプロンをつけて一人台所に立つ孤独な夜にふと思い出し、心慰められるような、親しみと可笑しみを持った優しい世界である。
