1980年5月発表。ピーター・ガブリエルのソロ第3作。前作・前々作に続きロバート・フィリップが参加している。プロデューサーはスティーブ・リリーホワイト。
インパクトの強い名曲ぞろい。特に4『I Don't Remember』、7『Games Without Frontiers』(ケイト・ブッシュがボーカルで参加)、そして圧倒的な10『Biko』がすばらしい。ポール・ウエラーやフィル・コリンズも参加していて『Car』の頃のGenesisで構築してきたものではなく、自分自身の内面を一人見つめようという姿勢から脱却し、ピーター特有の『明るさ(難しい表現だが彼なりの明るさは特別だ)』も出てきて、多くのミュージシャンを受け入れようという気持ちになってきたのを感じられる。とは言え、Genesis脱退の傷を癒すのに13年の月日が必要だったことが分かる。
アルバム・ジャケットの『Melt』はかたくなだった彼の氷解が始まった象徴に感じられる。ここから彼は数多くの人々の中へと入って行く。

Biko...私はこの1曲でGabrielのファンになった一人です。

一人の人間が殺された。その理由は黒人だったから。
貧困でも、戦争でも、妬みでも無く、ただ肌の色が黒い、
それだけで警察署内で殺された...唄の内容はそれだけです。

でもGabrielはこの曲の向こうで皆に問い掛けるのです。
あなたは怒りを感じませんかと。文化、思想、習慣。
その多彩さを認めてこそ人間らしく有りませんかと。
その唄声は多くの共感を呼び、感動を与えてくれました。

World Musicのパイオニア。New Waveの先駆者。
ElectricでSolidなRockの体現者。多くの方のGabrielへの
賛辞ですが、私は詩人としての奥深さに心打たれました。

Gabrielの研ぎ澄まされた感性から生み出された言葉。
その言葉をしっかり耳に刻み込ませるRhythmとMelody。

Bikoに限らず、その他の曲も偏見とおごりに対する
かなり辛辣で皮肉を含めた曲が多く｢音楽の世界を変える力｣を
感じたい方に絶対お勧めの1枚です。

プロデューサーに新鋭スティーブリリーホワイトを迎え、ピーターガブリエルの以後の活動を方向づける意味で最も重要なアルバム。ゲストミュージシャンのロバートフィリップ、ポールウエラー、ケイトブッシュなどの個性と見事に調和した傑作。リズム隊には熟成の域に達したお馴染みのメンバーを揃え、1曲1曲はもちろんだが全体でひとつのフォーマットとして最後まで一気に聞き込んでしまう。
