   ザ・フーのナンバーは美しく痛快で、ときにはモハメド・アリのパンチのように強烈で馬鹿げたポップソングだった。そうした偉大な数々のナンバーは、下手なベスト盤やひどいパッケージングのために、これまで割を食ってきた。けれども、このスリリングな、まぎれもなくクラシック・ロック屈指のバンドはついに2枚組の本作で、全キャリアを見わたす入門編的なコンピレーション盤を手にした。収録曲のほとんどの選曲に頭を悩ます必要はない。たとえ「My Generation」「I Can See for Miles」「Baba O'Riley」などの大ヒット曲がなくても、「Boris the Spider」「Pure and Easy」「Squeeze Box」といった長年のファンに人気のナンバーを選べばいいのだから。もちろん選曲者としては、『Tommy』からもっと色々なナンバーを、さらに、異論もあろうが最高の（そして間違いなく最もいかれた）『The Who Sell Out』から1曲でなく他にも入れたかったことだろう。だが、やはり本作はファン向け（バンドの音源をすべて集めようとするマニアックなファンは除く）というよりも、初心者にぴったりのコンピレーション盤なのだ。（Mike McGonigal, Amazon.com）

ザ･フーの最新２枚組ベスト盤（初回盤のみボーナス･ディスク付き）。ザ･フーのリマスター･シリーズではほとんどの曲がリミックスされているが、このベスト盤はオリジナル･マスターからのリマスターで、オリジナル･ミックスで聴けることもマニア心をくすぐる内容である。ということは、「I'm A Boy」の冒頭のコーラス入りミックスはリマスター･シリーズでは初登場（しかもリアル･ステレオ）。「The Kids Are Alright」のＵＳエディット･モノ･ミックス、「Boris The Spider」､「Magic Bus」のリアル･ステレオ、「See Me Feel Me」のシングル･ヴァージョンも初登場。逆に「Happy Jack」､「Call Me Lightning」は疑似ステレオでの収録で、必ずしもオリジナル･ミックスが使用されているとは言い難い。ハッキリ言って、ボックス･セットや『The Very Best Of ~』などの編集盤における各種ミックス違いの収録はマニア泣かせである。そうは言っても、内容的に決定盤と言えるベスト盤には違いなく、選曲的にも（個人的には「Dogs」と「Relay」がシングルＡ面曲でありながら、またしても未収録なのは不満だが）妥当な選曲だろう。初回盤のみのボーナス･ディスクはレア音源４曲を収録したもので、「Substitute」は一部歌詞が違うＵＳシングル･ヴァージョン。「I'm A Boy」は71年の編集盤『Meaty Beaty Big & Bouncy』に収録された別テイクの編集ヴァージョン。「Happy Jack」は『A Quick One』のリマスター盤にボーナスとして収録されたヴァージョンと同じと思いきや、ヴォーカルの後ろで鳴っているチェロの音が一部抜けているだけのものでほぼ同じ。「Magic Bus」も『The Very Best Of ~』に収録されているモノ･ミックスと同じで、レア音源集とは偽りあり。なお、ジャケ違いの英盤のボーナス･ディスクには74年チャールトンでのライヴ映像（quicktime movie）が２曲追加収録されている。

またベスト盤かよ！と思いきや、今回は一ひねり、入ってます。選曲が、ではなく、おまけが。初回版のみに添付されているボーナス・ディスクがくせ者なんですな。ここにリストアップされている曲目だけではわからないと思いますが、CDのスリーヴにはこう書いてあります。１曲目の"Substitude"は"Rare U.S. Single Version"、"I'm A Boy"は"Early Version"、"Happy Jack"は初公開のアコースティック・ヴァージョン、で"Magic Bus"は"U.K. Single Version"、とレア・トラック満載。ま、かなり重箱の隅を突いた感じではありますが。ついでに本編に入っている"See Me, Feel Me"もシングル・ヴァージョンです。これも実は初CD化じゃないです？逆に"Real Me"はアルバム・テイクをそのまんま変なフェード・アウトで強引に入れていたりしますが（笑）。何はともあれ、選曲は文句なしに"Ultimate"ですので初めての人にもオススメですし、昔からのファンの方も初回プレス目当てに買ってみたらどうです？

ザ･フーのベストアルバムのＵＫ盤のおまけ付３枚組の限定盤です。米国盤の限定盤を買い逃した人、国内盤におまけが付かないので不満に思っている人には打って付けの商品です。通常盤の２枚組には米国盤より５曲多い４０曲、おまけの４曲入りＣＤはエンハンスト仕様で２曲のライブ映像が追加収録されています。古くからファンには、おまけのＣＤ以外目新しいものは有りませんが、彼らの代表曲が目一杯詰め込まれたこの３枚組セットは、文字通り究極のコレクションと言えるでしょう。
