　デビュー作「Always...」で凄まじい咆哮を上げていたデス・ヴォーカルが脱退。替わって、男女2人のヴォーカルを加入させた1993年、2作目。男性がダミ声の爬虫類的なニールス・ドゥフューズ。女性が線の細い声ながら美人のマルティネ・ヴァン・ローンである。

　分厚いギター・リフとグランド・ピアノに、デス声を組み合わせた前作「Always...」はインディーズとしてはかなりのヒットになったことから、ファンもこのサウンドを期待していた。ところが出てきたのは、ポップになったギターにダミ声ヴォーカル。メディアからも酷評され、殆ど売れなかったそうである。
　このパッケージは、自己のレーベル Psychonaut を設立し、リマスタリングを施した1999年の再発売盤。平坦だったオリジナルよりも、数段奥行きが出ており、効果は抜群だ。

　そして、楽曲も、今冷静に見れば、3作目の「Mandylion」で大ブレイクする素地が出来つつある。特にオープニング・トラック「On A Wave」は結構良い曲で、バッキングだけ聴けば、畳み掛ける展開の格好いいロック。「2作目は厳しい」という世間一般の評価は必ずしも正しくないと思う。しばらくの間封印されていたが、最近はこのアルバムからの曲も、たまに取り上げられたりする。

　個人的にはトリップ・アンビエントになってしまった最新作「Home」より、こっちの方が「ロック」していて遥かに好きだ。MEGADETHなどスラッシュ系のダミ声Vo.がOKのゴシック・ファンなら、聴いてもいいかも知れない。

オランダ出身のゴシックメタルバンド「The Gathering」によるセカンドアルバムです。1993年リリース。

ファースト「Always...」（1992年）では実にオーソドックスなゴシックメタルバンドという印象でしたが、ここではボーカルが交代。デス声ではなくて上手いのか下手なのかよくわからないノーマルボイスへと転換しています。結果としてはこのボーカル交代は完全に裏目に出てしまったようで、せっかくのゴシックメタルサウンドに水を差してしまっています。どう贔屓目に見ても、これは失敗作ですね。

それでもギターとキーボードはファーストに比較してより重厚になり、幅と奥行きが加わっていますし、2曲ほどMartine Van Loonという女性ボーカルが入るあたりは、後の「新生Gathering」を髣髴とさせる雰囲気を醸し出しています。それだけに、「ああ、いい感じ」と盛り上がってきたところで場を乱す男性ボーカルは興ざめです。デス声で吠えてくれればかなりポイントは高いと思うんですが。

やはり衆目の一致するように、天才女性ボーカリスト・アネク嬢が加入した3rd「MANDYLION」の登場をもって、彼らのリスタートとしたいものです。
