最初某雑誌で見たとき、ジャケの騎士の後姿がダース・ベーダーに見え、スターウォーズのサントラかと思いました（笑）。
そんなこともあって印象に残っていたので、店頭に並んでいるのを見て衝動買いした本作ですが、それがとんでもない名盤で、感動して買ってきてから数日とにかく聴きまくりました。

アコースティックなイントロで始まる「時は昔」、ベースリフがぐいぐい引っ張っていき疾走感溢れる「いつか世界は」、
コーラスが美しく穏やかな「ブローイン・フリー」、本作のハイライトの一つ「キング・ウィル・カム」、アルペジオの幻想的な「木の葉と小川」、
イントロのギターでＫＯ！の「戦士」、ギター・バトルが最高に熱い「剣を棄てろ」

全７曲（ボーナス・トラックのライブ３曲を除く）どれを取っても名曲揃い！ジャケットのイメージと見事にマッチして一曲も欠かすことのできないトータル・アルバムです。

私は二十歳の大学生なので、周りにはせいぜいツェッペリンやパープルくらいしか聴いている人がいなく、友人に“最近ウィッシュボーン・アッシュ聴いてる”と言っても大体の人に“すげえマニアックなの聴いてるな”とか言われます。しかし、これは私と同世代の若いリスナーにこそ是非とも聴いてもらいたい名盤です！

アイディアの豊富さ、旋律の美しさ、躍動感など、ロックに必要な要素をバランス良く備えたバンドの代表格がこのウィッシュボーン・アッシュだ。とにかくバランスの良さには感服するしかない。
アンディ・パウエルのテクニカルなギターとテッド・ターナーのイマジネイション溢れるフレーズを得意とするギター。この資質の異なる２人によるツイン・ギターの演奏が、このバンドのサウンドをうまく調和させている。
またコーラスも適度な要素として用いられ、「完璧なハーモニー」などと謳われるような凝り固まったニュアンスのそれとは違う“サウンドのアクセント”としてうまく機能しているように感じる。
このバンドは「決定打を欠く」と評される事も多かった。しかしこの適度な品の良さがこのバンドの特色であり、決して悪いものではない。むしろ先述した通り、あらゆる面においてバランスを保っている事で「One & Only」の世界を見事に構築しているのだから一級の世界的バンドと評価すべきであろう。彼らの楽曲には駄作がなく、その意味ではこのアルバム以外の作品にも秀作が多い。初期の作品から聴き通してみるとそれが良くわかるはずだ。
