When Coldcut initially released 70 Minutes of Madness in 1997, it caused a mighty stir amongst the dance community. Mixing drum & bass, electro, dub, hip-hop, reggae, experimental sounds and avant-garde techno (artists featured include Photek, Plastikman, Masters at Work and Pressure Drop) into a tight and cohesive whole, it was seen as one of the decade's most daring, mischievous and innovative mixes. One of the album's main achievements was to render many so-called "mix compilations" narrow and basic, so it's current rerelease into a musical climate saturated with these insipid comps couldn't be more timely or relevant. Not a beat is missed as the appositely named LP barrels and blusters through tune after tune, climbing from peak to peak with mighty, imaginative strides. Even now, with so much access to so much good music, mixes that dare to be this febrile and capricious are pretty much nonexistent. It's therefore testament to the forward-looking ethos of Jonathan More and Matt Black that this perdurable compilation still has so much impact seven years after it was constructed.
