オールスターキャストによる大スペクタクルは、スター個々の出番を作る必要からスターが前に出てしまい、映画そのものの筋が後回しになる傾向があるが、この映画はその一歩手前で止まっており、娯楽映画として楽しめる内容となっている。サンフランシスコに完成した世界最高階ビルの竣工式の最中に、電気系統から出火してビルの上部が燃え上がる大災害を引き起こす過程と救出作戦が緊張感を持続させて展開する。消防隊のキャプテンであるスティーブ・マックイーンとビル設計者であるポール・ニューマンの二人が、この救出劇で主役として活躍する。これにウイリアム・ホールデンやフレッド・アステアが絡む豪華な出演者となっている。

ジョン・ウィリアムスのテーマ曲がとても良いです。
最初にヘリが海岸を飛んで、この曲が響くシーンは
昔ビデオテープが伸びてしまうくらい繰り返して見ました。(笑)
吹奏楽で是非演奏したかった曲のひとつです。
それが今この価格で手に入るとは感動物です。
モーリー・マッカバンの曲もいいですね。
