デビッドボウイとジェニファーコネリー共演のファンタジー。

ボウイ自身が魔王ジャレス役で、マペット（人形：手下のゴブリンたち。セサミストリートのスタッフが関わっている）たちと自らの曲を歌い、演技するミュージカルのような映画。作中に書き下ろされた曲やインストをCD化したのがこの作品。LPからCDへと移行しつつある時代で値段も3000円と今に比べれば高価だが、十分に楽しめる内容となっている。作中でジャレスの囚われの身になる赤ちゃんのトビーの声が効果音になっている曲があるが、実はこの声ボウイの裏声なのだとか。映画も当時１歳の私の妹が喜んで繰り返し見たがるほど楽しい内容である。

中学でCDラジカセを買ってもらい、なぜか初めて買ったCDがコレ。当時、米国で人気だったテーブルトークゲームのD&Dにハマっていて、それでラビリンス、ゴブリンなどの単語が俺の琴線に触れ、映画も観たことない癖に購入した。34になっても未だに聴いており、その旋律はもはや刷りこみとなって俺の細胞の奥深くまで浸透している。
とにかく素晴らしいサントラだ。その音色は聴く者をただちにファンタジーの世界へ誘ってくれる。後になって映画も観たが、随分薄っ平で退屈な内容だったのを覚えている。D・ボウイ、なんとなく浮いてたし・・・
